Plane crashes at Pearson Airport

"TORONTO (CP) - An Air France passenger jet burst into flames after skidding off the runway while trying to land at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

The number of passengers was not immediately available.

Smoke billowed from a wooded area near Highway 401, Canada's busiest highway as emergency crews sped to the scene. A portion of the plane's wing could be seen jutting from the trees.

Peel police say the craft was an Air France passenger jet that was attempting to land when it ran into trouble.

"An Air France plane landing on runway 2-4 left went off the end of the runway the area of Convert Drive and the 401 area in Mississauga," said Sgt. Glyn Griffiths.

"Unknown at the time of any injuries. Flame was seen from the plane. And full response by all emergency vehicles."

He couldn't say whether any passengers had been removed from the plane."

"An Air France passenger plane has crashed near Hwy. 401 while it was landing, sending the pilot and an unknown number of passengers to hospital, Peel Region police say.

The A340 Airbus plane was landing when it ran off the runway about 4 p.m., said Sgt. Glyn Griffiths.

"A pilot has gone to hospital and they were picked up on the 401 and a number of other passengers were wandering around the area so we're trying to head them off. I haven't got any information on casualties at all.""

There's been two explosions but it seems like many passengers got off so lets keep our hopes up.

Officially, they aren't sure yet. They did say that there was a bunch of lightning shortly before the crash. My guess would be that the pilots probably got blinded by the lightning and that it could very well have messed up the controls, coupled with the poor visability causing the plane to overshoot the runway. It didn't actually crash in mid flight. From what I understand, it was already landed, or landing, and didn't stop in time.

They're saying no deaths and only minor injuries now. So it doesn't sound like things are that bad.

They're lucky they got away before the explosions. There was some pretty serious shrapnel that flew 150 feet.
