Worldwide cannabis production up 25%

Worldwide cannabis production up 25%
June 29, 2005 - news24.com

Production of cannabis, the most commonly used street drug in the world, has jumped by around 25% in one year, the United Nations said in a report on Wednesday.

An estimated 161 million people used cannabis in 2003, equivalent to 4% of the global population between the ages of 15 and 64, the UN said its 2005 World Drug Report.

The production of cannabis - marijuana and hashish - may have exceeded 40 000 tons in 2003, up from 32 000 the previous year, said the report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The production of herbal cannabis is "extremely dispersed", while production of cannabis resin, or hashish, seems to be concentrated in Morocco, which supplies 80% of the resin consumed in Europe, the world's largest resin market.

Seizures of cannabis herb, the most widely trafficked drug, rose again in 2003, reaching 5 845 tons, 58% of which occurred in North America, with Africa providing another 26%.

Cannabis resin seizures also increased to a new all-time high in 2003 - 1 361 tons - 70% of it in Western Europe.

Far more of UNODC's 101 member states felt cannabis use was increasing than decreasing in 2003.

"Use among students appears to be on the increase in Europe, though not in the United States or Australia," the report said

In Afghanistan - where a majority of the world's opiates are produced - the amount of land dedicated to growing opium poppy increased to record highs, but bad weather ruined much of the crops so that the global increase in opium production stayed at two per cent, the report said.

The overall retail value of illegal drugs sold worldwide in 2003 was about $322 billion US - higher than the individual gross domestic product for 88 per cent of the world's countries, the report said.

Amphetamines was still the world's second most popular drug, with 26 million users, while there were an estimated 7.9 million ecstasy users worldwide.

The report said the main "problem drugs" globally for people seeking help at treatment centres are cocaine and opiates, such as heroin. In Europe and Asia, 62 per cent of those seeking help for drug abuse in 2003 were addicted to opiates, while 59 per cent of all drug treatment in South America was for cocaine. Cannabis was the most common drug for people seeking treatment in Africa and North America.

> the most commonly used street drug in the world

Wow... more commonly used than tabacco or alcohol? Perhaps I am misreading what they mean by 'street drug' ... perhaps they shouldn't use slang.

> An estimated 161 million people used cannabis in 2003, equivalent to 4% of the global population

So if 161 million people want to consume a plant, then why is it illegal?

> may have exceeded 40 000 tons in 2003, up from 32 000 the previous year

Or it may have not exceeded 1 ton in 2003, and actually been down from the previous year. "May" isn't "Is". Just because I "may" be the richest person in the world doesn't mean it is true.

> Far more of UNODC's 101 member states felt cannabis use was increasing than decreasing in 2003.

I don't care how they feel... show me some facts... I feel that the 101 member states of UNODC's should each give me one million dollars... somehow I suspect they are going to laugh at how I feel... which is pretty much how I feel about them telling me how they feel.

> The overall retail value of illegal drugs sold worldwide in 2003 was about $322 billion US

Take home a 5% sales tax on that... the government could easily make 16 billion on sales tax alone, not to mention how much they would save by cleaning out the legal system, jails, etc... If they taxed at 20% or more as is common with other vice taxes, this would be over 64 billion in tax revenue per year.

somehow I think that 58% has more to do with our DEA and government ideology than actual amount present/used in a country.

I hope that's true. Perhaps we're moving towards a new era for drugs.
