I got me my first one three weeks ago, still looking at rocks and algae so far!! 82 gallons of salt water, heaters, powerheads, lights, filters and live rock.

can't wait for the ammonia to cycle to zero, the nitrite to cycle to zero, and finally the nitrates to get settled. maybe next week i'll be able to get my first few shrimps and hermit crabs, perhaps a fish or two....  :smile: if anyone's interested i could put a piccy or two up for diagnoses.....

If I would get anything it would be a piranha tank, but i'm soo lazy i can't even take proper care of my Chia Bart so i don't see it ever happening

that's pretty big.
i'd like to start maybe a 20 gallon marine aquarium and just fill it with a bunch of those clown fish.

apparently 40 gal is as low as you should go, smaller is supposed to be too fine a balance, and a sure way to kill fish unless you're a pro. but what do i know, this is all a first for me. :tongue:

can anyone tell me if that white cobwebby-looking stuff is to be encouraged or blown off with the turkey baster? i can't decide if it's a dying or a growing colony of good or of bad bacteria - i feel like a first-time-pftekker again  :laugh:

and i definitely plan on getting a big white host anemone with its resident nemos  :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup:

whatever your pet store person tells you, damselfish do not make great starter fish. they will be impossible to remove later on, and are territorial and aggressive.

Just curious. As a first timer, isn't a saltwater tank more difficult to maintaina and take care of?

i've kept tropicals before, and i did my research. more maintenance yes, but it's like any hobby, mycology even - the more you put in, the more you get out: i have to replace, test and refresh water more, clean up is about the same, but the potential viewscapes kick tropical fish out of the water and into space. i love scubadiving, so this was a must-do.

I would add a back ground too, to hide the pipes and wires, something plain, like blue.

a couple of months ago i was planning on starting a nano tank.

i had picked out all the soft coral, rock and 2 fish (1 goby 1 clown) to go into it...there is a thread about it here somewhere in teh pub...

the significant other and i had decided to wait until fall to start it up..so i'll definately be posting some pics and info when we do :thumbup:

the plan has changed though...we're going for an 80 gallon tank instead of 40 (before that it was 20) like originally planned :smile:

i do, however, think your rock formation should be a little cooler, less stacked in the back maybe? just 1 or 2 in the front to give it character?

oh, and definetly buy nemo :grin:

there's the thread...

take a look at the species of soft corals and inverts i put there...u might be interested in putting them in your tank!

also, you're lucky cause saltwater fish/corals/equipiment is so much cheaper in the UK than it is here.

for every kilo of indonesian live rock it's 10 euros :blush:

for a clownfish it's 35 euros

and there's only 1 saltwater fish store in all of southern finland :frown:

yea, maybe use less evenly sized rocks, and make caves and arches and whatnot? and yea, needs a background.

i think the aquascaping is ok...once shirley adds inverts/corals into the tank it'll look good
