After a brusque conversation with a friend over which was better (judging by the games), I am curious on all of your opinions on which game(s) was better.

I'm actually going to have to go with Street Fighter. While MK had better graphics and more blood and guts, I think Street Fighter had better characters. And plus, it's just one of those games I grew up on, so it has more sentimental value to me.

Are we talking original style street fighter and mortal kombat or golden age super street fighter 2 vs ultimate mortal kombat?

Yeah it was.
Anyone here remember the SF movie with Jean Claude Van Dam (sp?)... thats where SF went downhill for me.
But putting the movies aside, I found Mortal Kombat to be more bad ass; fatalities, deadly arenas, kick ass characters...
I did enjoy fighting with the large russian guy in SF though.

Street Fighter II champion edition barely takes Mortal Combat II IMO. Fatalities is the only thing I ever liked bettwe with MK

My first memory with MK was this black kid who was 4 years older then me, his name was Dominique I think. Back when I lived in an apartment with my family, I'd go over his house every day and play MK for hours.
We hung out until one day he told me he was going to kill me... I called the cops... haven't spoke to him since

That's a pretty good question.
Street fighter has a more sentimental value for me than Mortal Kombat due to the fact that I played with it quite a long time before MK was released. But MK does seem to have the edge in quality theatrics and complexity - although complexity doesn't necessarily equate to quality. There are many simple games that last far longer in terms of popularity than do many complex games.
One of the most important - if not the most important - qualities that amount to a memorable game, or even video, T.V. show, etc., is the characters within. Anything can have an extraordinary plot, dazzling special effects, great scripting, and excellent directing... but if the characters are less than par, then it will most likely not succeed very far. I believe this is where Mortal Kombat has the strongest upper-hand. Had it been created with regular humanoid fighters all equipped with fighting styles limited only to the mainstream martial arts, I suspect it probably wouldn't have gained the popularity as it has. That's not to say that SF is awful in this department, but in contrast to MK, it just doesn't seem to match, in my humble opinion.
Overall, I would say Mortal Kombat has been the best... but Street Fighter will always have a special place in my heart.
I suggest you create a secondary poll to see what are the most preferred choices for fighters in each of the two...
In SF, I always used Chun Li. After defeating my opponents, I could always twist the knife by adding: "You just got whupped by a lady."
In MK, Scorpion [of course] was always the one I used. Notice he is one of the very few characters that never actually dies in the MK movies?

Well he sure seems quite "mortal" in the actual fighting games..
BTW, my utmost favorite fighting game ever.. was called "Dark Rift" for Nintendo 64.
Has anybody ever played this?
Had fighters like "Demonica"..."Zenmuron"..."Morphix"... Really excellent cast.

i'm gonna say mortal combat cause i knew all the moves and fatalities. although, street fighter preceedes mortal combat and rules in its own sense. haadoogin.
