Hubble Abandoned.
    #3666823 - 01/23/05 07:06 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

The White House has ordered NASA to cease all attempts to save the Telescope either by robotic or a human mission, and to focus solely on deorbiting it when it fails in the next couple of years. The full story is on www.space.com if any is interested, but they are very reliable. It goes on to say that some senators and house members may try to save it when congress reconvenes, but it doesnt really sound like they have a choice. Everyone always says NASA spends to much money that should be spent at home, but if you work out the numbers less than 1% of the federal anual budget will go to NASA, and its up from before. something like 800billion dollars in DoD funds compared to the 15 billion NASA recieves. Because of this one of the single most important peices of equipment to Astronomers everywhere will be lost forever.

The sucessor, the James Webb Telescope i believe its called, will not be able to take optical light images, and wont be in space until 2011 or something.

NASA must be pissed, I know I am.

What is wrong with trying to put a man on mars? That would be pushing the limits of what human possibility, and that is what NASA is all about, right?

A sad day indeed for science. Of course, buying weapons takes precedence over science these days....

I don't think phi1618 is criticizing the idea of putting a man on mars. I think hes criticizing Bush for allowing one of NASAs most valuable assets be lost, while at the same time claiming to support exploration of the solar system.

Am I right phi?

Yea i think that the one good thing that Bush has done so far was probrobly his Moon Mars and Beyond space strategy. The problem is that now that its being put into effect more and more of purely scientific missions have been severely cut or like the hubble abandoned.

On the other hand at least NASA has a clear vision now. Ever since the last apollo mission that is something it has been severly lacking.

It is sad about the loss of Hubble, I agree. But I am so happy about the success of the cassini/hyugens mission so far. I mean this is amazing.
How many bodies in our solar system have we actually landed a probe on? I know that this is the first moon that we have ever explored besides our own, but have we only actually landed a probe or humon on the our moon, mars, and titan?

that's really sad... They're just going to let it become another piece of space junk... how are they going to land a man on mars if they can't even take care of a satellite for more than 15 years?
