Greyhound bus tomorrow (first time)
    #3450161 - 12/05/04 01:22 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Tomorrow I'm taking a Greyhound northbound, this will be my first time riding on the bus. Any tips or suggestions on making my trip somewhat pleasant? I have CD player, batteries, hemp & beads, notebook & pens... anything else I should bring along?

And out of curiosity, do they ever search you?

dramamine (or something similar) if you suffer from motion-sickness at all (esp. if you live in a mountainous region). i dunno about the searching, i've never ridden the bus in the US (except the school bus!). i'm taking my first greyhound trip this week as well - heading to northern Ontario on an overnight bus. Hopefully it won't be too crowded - if i can't sprawl out, i'll never be able to get to sleep.

yes, it's true. greyhound is by far, the worst form of travel. the chairs are uncomfortable, your crammed next to fat slob strangers who barely speak english, and they stink, and your stuck on the bus for XX amount of hours... after about 5 hours you soon realize how much you dun fucked up

they wake you up in the middle of the night and tell you to get off, take your stuff (or not)... hours go by, you get on another one, or your's get's back from cleaning..... it sucks...

oh, and about trying to get some sleep... you never really 'sleep'. not only are the seats uncomfortable, your head will want to go to one side, if you have a window seat, you think you can just rest your head against the window right? nope, that shit rattles all to hell, even with a pillow.... and you cant go the other way, cause some strangers head is right there.... it's horrible.

oh yea, you will definetly want a pillow and thin blanket.

how long is your trip? iv'e done 30 hours from seattle to LA twice.... it sucked both times

Silven's Guide to: Greyhound Comfort

1) Dude, bring a small pillow. Greyhound busses are irregularly uncomfortable. It's horrible.

2) Also, be wary of making eye contact with anyone wearing a trash bag and a pair of brand new nike shoes. If you happen to go to Columbus ohio, watch out for a dude who calls himself "Big Pappa", he'll follow you in the bathroom and stare at you while you relieve yourself.

3) Don't leave any of your shit sit down on the ground for more than 10 seconds, and if you do, make sure you have your eyes directly on it at all times.

4) Talk to the people who look like ravers and hippies. You meet cool people that way.

5) And my final tip.. find your gate as soon as you get to your station.. I missed two busses in the past and it sucks waiting another 4 hours and being rerouted, etc.

luckily i've only got a 8 hour trip or so this weekend. i've had to ride like 16 hours or something from Oslo to western Norway, up and down and up and down and up and down mountains.... i don't normally get car-sick, but that trip has caused me to puke more than once.

Not to mention the fact that the terminals are always in the worst part of town. Expect to get accosted by a crackhead or two at the stations....

this is ture, be careful, I wouldn't go into the bathrooms either unless you absolutly have to, a syou might get followed in by someone. this happened to my brother, the guy asked for some change, and my bro kindly said he didn't have any and walked quickly out... of course he wasn't muggeed or anything, but it could happen.

yes, get to your terminal, and wait for as long as it takes.... cause when you get on the bus, you want to fool yourself into thinking your going to pick a good seat before your forced to sit next to the guy who smells like ass and bo....

if your going thru portland oregon, it's a pretty good 95% chance that someone will try to sell you crack within 5 seconds of leaving the station...

and let me just tell you about how ghetto the station is in sacramento, it's like walking into some third world country, thiers tons of people everywhere, you dont know what the hell is going on, they dont really tell you what terminal you should be at, and you just sorta have to guess as to if it's your bus or not getting loaded right now.... make sure to ask the driver "is this the bus going to XXXX"...

oh, and it's funny as hell watching people trying to sneak on the bus... i guarantee you'll see atleast one person try this.

Drug dogs? Not here. The bus terminals usually consist of a dinner or something up here in the NOrth COuntry. BOrder Patrol stops, but thats it. They ask where you were born. Be realistic, they dont have the time to search a bus.

Keep on your toes through the whole trip. Greyhound isn't like an airport. they don't pay they're employees much, and they're stations are always guaranteed to be in the worst possible part of town. Keep all belongings in sight at all times. Be prepared to have any number of bus station scams run on you. Bag switches, pick pockets, pedophiles, thieves, beggars, con artists, drug dealers, and every shade of shady character congregates at the bus stations.
Know your route, ask again frequently just to be sure, yet don't trust what they tell you. The system is very chaotic. If they say the bus leaves in ten minutes assume that it could leave in 5.
You've got to guard your seat if you don't want anyone to sit next to you. So every time that the bus stops and lets new people on get in the isle seat, and pretend to be asleep. That way you'll be the last person that has to share a seat with potentially fat, stinky, and creepy people.
I made it my entire trip (Texas to Ohio and back) without being searched, but i did see one bus at one station get shook down by the po's.
And the number one rule that you got to remember, is that no matter how comfortable that big seat looks in the back of the bus, put at least 2 rows of seats between you and it, or else you might spend several hours smelling people shit.

but aside from that, the greyhound is a cool experience. You get to see the country up close, and personal. You meet some interesting people too.

don't sit in the back. This should be pretty obvious, but you want to distance yourself as much as possible from the crapper.
