best website provider?
    #316899 - 05/14/01 12:31 PM (22 years, 11 months ago)

Hey I'm going to make a website....what is everybody's opinions on what website provider is the best? Consider web space, speed, advertisements, www address, etc. BTW, must be free. Thanks a lot beforehand.

I have used Tripod for a few years. It has served me well. All free sites will attach adds to your pages but Tripod seems to be the least invasive (I fucking HATE Geocities and all the shit they stick on your pages!). And Tripod has a pretty easy interface for uploading and managing files. And I think they give you something in the nieghborhood of 50mb to work with so you have plenty of room for a personal site. So I would recommend checking them out.

www.tripod.com

Another thing I like about them is that your site name is not complex. It will be...
http://yourname.tripod.com
...when you register as "yourname". Remember when you are registering that Tripod is a 'case sensitive' site. In other words, upper and lower case letters are seen differently in all website addresses (so it is sometimes better to leave everything lower-case to avoid confusion in the future).

So to the Summit,

What is the URL of your web-site at Tripod and what do you have on your web-site?

you should check with your internet access provider if you use a local one. my internet access provider will give you 10mb of space for a one time fee of $5.

i use batcave. not a lot of people on it, so its not really crowded. and they host pics offsite (the real reason i started using it). plus, no popups that ive encountered (as opposed to tripod). you get a whatever.batcave.net address. hey, plus im a dork who likes batman references.

batcave homepage
osc's page please dont judge batcave on what shit i have on here though ::grin:: (can you tell i dont know html? not really looking to right now; batcave has some free html editors they recommend as well when you sign up.)

**edit** a friend told me theyre having problems loading pics from offsite- i dont, but i also signed up before batcave moved their servers. my friend didnt look too much into it, but if uploading pics somewhere from offsite is a consideration, batcave may not be as great as i thought it was for other people.

MJ- I keep 2 sites at Tripod. One is the same as my name here. (http://tothesummit.tripod.com). I use that space for uploading all kinds of pictures and things to link to at places like The Shroomery. (Things like my picture to the left and the mushroom cloud in my signature I also keep there)

The other site I don't share with folks here just for the sake of anonymity. It is an actual website I created with all kinds of personal stuff. My photography and poetry, my camping and backpacking trips, personal bios on me and my friends and family, etc. I designed it specifically to share with friends and family.

ocill8- Just as a sidenote here. When veiwing websites at tripod here is a way to avoid those pesky pop-ups. When you first go to a site there you don't close the first pop-up ad you see. Just minimise it and leave it down on your toolbar and out of veiw. You shouold'nt see any more pop-ups and you can close that first one when you leave Tripod.

I don't know what happened to my tripod stuff. Maybe they just quit hosting offsite graphics. I have never had a problem in the years I have used them until just the last month or so. My stuff is stilll there but it doesn't want to show here. Hmmmm. Oh well, theres a lot of optins out there for free sites, I'm just use to Tripod and I hate to change.
