VERY Risky Using Paypal After Sept 24th
    #3129240 - 09/13/04 11:42 AM (19 years, 6 months ago)

SAN FRANCISCO--PayPal, the online payments arm of eBay, on Friday said it will soon fine people up to $500 for uses related to gambling, adult content or services, and buying or selling prescription drugs from noncertified sellers.....more, click the link.

http://news.com.com/PayPal+to+levy+fines+for+gambling,+porn/2100-1026_3-5362576.html

It's just a matter of time before the spore vendors are considered "adult" businesses IMO which means that all the vendors and their customers would be assessed $500 fines.

I felt this was worth informing everyone about.

I would plan on NOT using Paypal after the 24th and we are seriously considering dropping Paypal alltogether.

I can't speak for the other vendors but TLG has never dropped Paypal mostly because of it's popularity and the fact that it was the vendor's money at risk of being frozen and not the customer.

This new policy endangers the customer as much as the vendor and TLG no longer sees this as an acceptable risk which is why I decided to start this thread.

If any vendor decides to accept Paypal after the 24th, they should at the very least make their customers aware of this new policy BEFORE they hit the checkout button.

thanks for the info. I sell alot on ebay and Paypal is main source for payment. I hope to get something else going so I can stop selling on ebay altogether. They really suck when comes down to it. Just another corrupted corparation. Seems they are putting the Patriot Act to good use.

In order for Paypal to implement a policy, they have to inform all vendors that a catagory of products are no longer acceptable. Spores are not pornography, and spores are not gambling. Spores are specimens for scientific study, and are completely legal in all but 3 states.

You can be sure to expect a "new policy" screen to appear soon when you go to log in to your account. You will either agree with the new policy or your account will be disabled.

This is how they do these things.

Try telling this to the 3 or 4 spore vendors who have already had their accounts shut down and their funds frozen.

This kind of thing will continue but now they'll remove the $500 from your account before unfreezing your funds and go after your customers as well.

All of this of course is speculative but it is too likely to happen to keep Paypal as a main payment option.

I dropped paypal after one ebay transaction (only one I ever made), they held it for a week when it was supposed to be instant pay. I had direct checking and for some reason my funds were held with them for a week (hrm, maybe interest they gain?)

That does suck,  PP has direct access to people's bank accounts, I think that's too powerful for them to have the right to use fines like that. I came on here to ask for recommendations to PP friendly sponsors, hehe.

For now i'd still appreciate any rec for a store that sells more than mush supplies and takes paypal

We still accept all major credit cards.

Paypal only accounts for about 25% of our sales.

Anyone with a bank account can use Paypal.

There are so many alternatives to Paypal that a vendor shouldn't feel stuck with having to keep it as their only processor.

I'm bumping this up, but we've heard no word from Paypal and I'm sure we'll all get the notice once their new rules go into effect.

Would buying a peyote cactus (or seeds) and sending it to country where it is illegal be considered "adult" content?...that doesn't sound right but I'm not sure what category that would fit under.  Ebay seems to have a lot of users that use paypal :frown:

That's because Paypal owns ebay.........or is it the other way around, I forget.

I'm suggesting to all my customers NOT to use paypal unless it's absolutely their only option.

Paypal has become downright scary.

I dropped Paypal alltogether this morning.

Here's a more recent article that states that Paypal informed everyone of the new policy on Aug 23rd.

http://www.internetnews.com/ec-news/article.php/3412371

Bottom line is, your next spore purchase may cost you five hundred dollars if you order them through Paypal.

Our customers are far to valuable to us to put them through such risk.

TLG still accepts all major credit cards but we will no longer accept Paypal.
