Manure in substrate
    #29689544 -

I've read how using cow manure is not considered wise but I have done it several times and highly recommend it. I used 2:2:2 poo, verm, boiling water and let it sit in a tightly sealed bucket wrapped in towels. I never needed to dunk it for multiple flushes. I've used coir for the first time recently and am still waiting on results, but I think it's a pain in the ass to break up and necessitates a face mask to keep your lungs from filling with it. The only downside of poo I've noticed is that it's, you know, shit.

Coir is easy for me, smash the bricks up with a hammer or hatchet or even a big screwdriver. Doesn't need to be tiny pieces. Add verm, boil water dump in. Come back the next day and spawn. Pasteurizing manure is a pain in the ass. I will do it to benefit certain species but for cubes? Pass.

Manure will work but like pasty said, if you are new or dont know what you're doin, its more work than just hydrating coir (without even needing to pasteurize it). Thats why the bucket tek is so popular cuz its so easy

That being said, I use horse manure, just gotta make sure your pasteurizing game is on point or be ready to fail

Noobs, stick to coir/verm

But manure is free.  🙂

If you’re going to go the manure route, go with field-aged horse manure.

Can I recommend instead of using a bucket wrapped up and towels use an igloo cooler that will keep it nominal temperatures for a lot longer

Yep, manure is free and if your method works for you then I'm the last one to tell anybody not to try it, would be nice though if you add a bit more
information like what kind of manure you are using (e.g. field aged, dried, from a bag and so on) so other can try and follow your method to a 'T' and
if you post some photos to provide a visual guide and some of your grows then people would be more inclined to try what you are suggesting is a sound method.

I am curious to see how exactly you are doing it.

Coir may as well be free even if a brick was $10 as soon as you grow one mushroom the point is moot. I can grab coir from a pet store or order it to my door. Manure takes a trip. And then preparing and pasteurizing it is work. Manure is FAR more expensive to me even if its free once you factor in time.

If breaking up coir is hard for you life probably is too ...

I do a little bit. Helps it get more even. I also used canna coir bricks which are like 900 grams and I would prep 3 at a time.

It's cool that it worked because I've never heard anyone recommend giving manure a bucket tek but I just wonder how many times have you successfully repeated it and has every single trial had a positive result or have there been failures along the way?

I definitely don't need to add more about WHY this isn't considered a good idea or why it's excessive since there are already some truly amazing and much more experienced members here helping you with that. I'm just really curious how many times you've managed to successfully repeat this process so we can rule out random luck.

I had a hatchet with a sharp edge and if you used the point and just pushed at the grain using it like a wedge, it would just shear apart easily. Takes about 30 seconds to break up 3 900 gram bricks
