Here is a REAL video endowed with a highly annoying AI voice. No need to listen to it, in fact, turn off the sound completely, look at what you see without distraction:





You are presented with two plain rings, with a stone of about 1 carat (=200mg) in each of them: one is a diamond, one is a moissanite.

Helpfully, the video does not show you which is which. :wink:

Let me tell you something the video does not tell:

The earth-grown diamond costs you $5,000
The lab-grown moissanite costs you $5

The price difference between these stones literally is a stark thousandfold.

Do they in any way look that different to you?


In terms of wear-and-tear, both stones are harder than sapphires and rubies, so they will outlast you by generations. In terms of toughness, which matters if you stub the stone on something hard, moissanite is in fact twice as tough as diamond so less likely to chip or fracture. So, both are comparatively durable, the diamond scratches the moissanite but the moissanite shatters the diamond.

Look at that video again, visually, Pretty damn close right? The one you prefer might not even be the diamond. If you saw one of them, is it not stunning, either of them?

One puts a captive bolt to your wallet, ten packs of five dollar bills, the other is a literal fiver.



This takes us to: The Lore of the Rings!

What is your preference?

Would you, I presume for an engagement or wedding ring but it can be any kind of stonebearing jewel, prefer to put the bulk of the money spent in the craftsmanship and metals of the ring, or would you want the financial gravity of the ring to lie in the stone?

A lab-grown diamond at about $400/ct is a middle road, totally a diamond but 12.5x less expensive than earth-grown, but let’s focus on these two extremes primarily.

Would it feel wrong to “underspend” or “overspend” on the stone?

The LORE of the Rings - does a diamond coming from the ground meaningfully add to it for you, or do you marvel at modern scientific advances that brought us a lab created version of moissanite, which is so rare on earth that natural gemsized gem quality moissanite is approximately a billion times rarer than gem sized gem quality diamonds, the largest ever found being 0.4 carat?

Most people are not all that into stones but, form an opinion, look at the two rings side by side…

It’s a little joke I put in the prompt “To hilarify the image make the 5 dollar bills look like Donald Trump disguised himself as Abraham Lincoln so he’d be on the bill.” GPT takes issue at exactly reproducing official documents (like money) and copyrighted brand logos, so that opens a door to getting creative in a way GPT is comfortable with, steering well clear of potential copyright claims.

Me, I prefer the 2.4x greater dispersion (rainbow fire) of moissanite over diamond, I feel the moissanite does more beautiful things with light than diamond.

It’s like a diamond with LSD inclusions :brainondrugs:



I also like the democratization of the aesthetic, that an artisan can set a well crafted 925 sterling silver ring of their own design with a decadent 1 carat moissanite and still be in the $10-50 price bracket, something well over $7,500 at Tiffany & Co.

But, to me, a good opal is unbeatable. Did you know those diamond-cunts used to set up horror stories in the papers about women wearing opals, getting tons of bad luck?

artificial stones are aesthetically pleasing, but what's more interesting energetically to actually wear - something that was forged 100+ miles underground that had to make an epic journey for millions of years to the surface or some shit someone put together in a lab?



I'll take larimar, labradorite, etc over diamond or synthetic diamond



but if I did have a diamond I'd use it to scratch people's mossinite for lulz

the same can be said of many things , i.e a $5 casio tells the same time as a rolex and polished brass looks like gold.

the diamond, gold and rolex still have a decent monetary value after you have bought them and if you want to sell them on.

.... the casio , brass and the moissanite on the otherhand are worth fuckall :grin:

if you want to pretend you have a diamond ring polish up a brass pluming olive and superglue the moissanite to it :wink:

*as twighead said above, theres a lot better looking precious and semi precious stones /minerals out there that dont cost much

Note the somewhat higher propensity to rainbow flashes.

Your wife's rival at the cocktail party couldnt discern it from a diamond ring though. :grin:

I'm infatuated with moissanite for many complex reasons, but yes, side by side in the sunlight they are strikingly similar, aren't they?

Love the rainbows though :nyan:

I would be interested though in one of those 1 kilo solid gold Cuban chains, but, not iced out, just pure gold slightly over spot.

I'm reserved about bejewelling myself. I enjoy the loose gemstones as altar pieces and to hold and admire but even though I'm gay I'd say jewels with sparkly stones are more fitting for women instead of men.

The crown jewels looked fine on Elizabeth but out of pace on Charles.

A bigass solid 1kg gold Cuban though.. mm.. I'm partial, I'd enjoy wearing that. Not one of those ridiculously jumbo hollow ones, and 18ct, not 12 or so.

it's all about the color coordination - they severely lack, deck that king out in black tourmaline, smoky quartz and obsidian and he be lookin' like a right well savage - also contrasts really dope with gold

I'd be afraid to wear gold, I could wear silver, even a thick silver chain I think is less likely to be targeted then gold, with gold a thief my take a chance at a fake, but lots of metals look like silver, is it worth the confrontation and possible fight for a thief to steal silver
