What species other than ours would sign a legally binding lifetime relationship contract or make any type of lifetime relationship commitment promise? It is as foolish as agreeing to a 40 year employment contract when you are 25. What sane person would do that? What parent would teach their kids this is a wise choice?
The Institution of Marriage is a form of voluntary authoritarianism. It's inhumane and unnatural - no other species would consider it for a moment. We put swan pairs on wedding cakes because we believe they pair bond for life, but that is a lie. They pair bond for a mating season.
Millions of people are miserable, as they suffer thru their "promise" that they made of lifetime commitment. The vast majority of humans just do not thrive under such duress. They might survive a 50 year commitment, but most people do not thrive.
And as far as a marriage license, why would anyone insert the legal system into their relationship? What pressure & chaos it adds.
Notice "progressives" refuse to address this sacred cow.
there are plenty of monogamous species. Penguins, voles, etc. over 90% of bird species are monogamous, and about 10% of mammalian species are monogamous.
the majority of humans who get married stay married. yes, the majority of marriages end in divorce, but it's a misleading statistic. If you get one divorce, on average you will have like 3.7 divorces. So basically there is a subset of people who just are unable to commit to a relationship. This is most likely due to a destruction of the ability to produce oxytocin due to promiscuity. Oxytocin is the hormone/neurotransmitter that induces social bonding. So between sexual partners, between a parent and a child, but also between social circles. There is a direct relationship between oxytocin production and sexual partners (not sexual experiences). There is 100% a biological difference between having sex with 100 people once and having sex with one person 100 times. This is why prostitution is looked down upon in society. It is because in a society, the prostitutes are the ones that don't bond with anyone and would be ok with fraternizing with an enemy tribe and give them advice on how to conquer a neighboring tribe. Humans are 100% designed to have loving relationships. This evolved from having secondary sexual characteristics present at all times, as opposed to just when a female is in estrus. Most mammals have a period of "heat" where the males know the females are fertile, and secondary sexual characteristics become pronounced and males become aroused and mate. With humans, secondary sexual characteristics are present at all times. As such, if we only mated when we were horny, humans would not mate as often as we would become desensitized to seeing secondary sexual characteristics (i.e. porn addiction and ED). So humans evolved to have sex for other reasons except pure sexual arousal.
As far as marriage goes, the entire idea of it is to create economic benefits for starting a family and raising a household. Plain and simple. It really has nothing to do with love or attraction and if you view marriage as purely because of love and attraction, that is probably why you will get divorced at least 3.7 times in your life.
Your entire viewpoint is unscientific and lacks reason. It is the viewpoint of an immature teenager who wants to justify lack of commitment or signal some sort of transcended understanding of human relationship. But ultimately, its not a new viewpoint. It's been around for centuries. And despite this fact, and the fact everyone is aware if it, most people get married and stay married. Almost as if there is a driving force behind monogamy that circumvents "logic and reason" as you probably see it.
We are slaves to our biology, for better or for worse. Fighting it normally leads to some sort of suffering or discontent.
