Desvenlafaxine and psilocybin

Hi everyone!

I wanted to ask if anyone has experience with Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) and using psilocybin?

My friend is interested in trying psilocybin treatment for the trauma and anxiety they’ve been suffering from for years. They asked me about it, but personally, I have no idea.

I’d appreciate any thoughts or opinions!

Desvenlafaxine, sold under the brand name Pristiq among others, is a medication used to treat major depressive disorder.[4] It is an antidepressant of the serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) class and is taken by mouth

Its got noradrenalin effects but also serotonin effects, so its related to SSRI’s, so theres a vivid risk that your trip will be reduced in both intensity and scope.

Indeed:

PUBMED: Conclusions: SSRI/SNRIs appear to weaken psilocybin drug effects relative to a non-serotonergic antidepressant. This dampening effect may last as long as 3 months following antidepressant discontinuation.

He can best try it 3 months after the end of his treatment, he will also be in a better health condition.

SNRI’s dampen and distort a psilocybin experience (actually your whole mindstate, so once back on his feet he should taper and discontinue).

What you get is “not really a trip”, probably also therapeutically.

Watch out he doesnt get too complacent, people on these antidepressants tend to develop a ladidee-ladidaa attitude about life since everyting feels kinda good anyway, so why bother putting in extra effort if the result doesnt feel extra good?

You know, it's a case I really struggle to fully understand. He's carrying trauma from being abused by his parents, and he's 55 now.

A member of his family circle used to organize ayahuasca ceremonies, so he attended them for years. He also used Bufo, tried acid in recent years, went to silent retreats, lived a healthy lifestyle... and the dark days always came back.

I worked with him as a friend and as a physical therapy professional. It was extremely frustrating to watch all progress disappear within days—no matter what methods we decided to use.

Until finally, out of desperation, he went to a psychiatric consultation and was prescribed Pristiq—and he seems to be doing "well" for now. But personally, I don't know much about antidepressants.

What he never tried was psilocybin, and that's where my doubts come in.

Anyway — thanks for your input, it's really helpful.

Psilocybin in of itself is insufficient, he’ll have to be willing to cronfont the traumatic material, because shrooms will shove it in his face.

Given what hes been through and current age, after he qut the Des, low-moderate dosed MDMA might be way more forgiving and therapeutic, but thats a topic for Other Drugs Discussion as it has some risks.

Pharms and psychs really don't mix. The brain treats them the same way. To the brain you're already tripping but you're not, so an extra dosing, well you get a little giddy, some residual effects.

I mixed Abilify and psilocybin and became depressed for over a year. So be careful.

Less dangerous to stop the medication for about 2 weeks then dose.
