Car Campin to Costa Rica * 1
    #29432746 -

I'm moving to Costa Rica, and I'm making it so the worst case I'm ok with sleeping in my car. I'm planning to homestead in CR. I know things like amazon are a lot easier in the USA so I'm trying to get all i can lined up before hand. I'm also planning to travel the USA for 1-3 months.

I'll post my stuff here. Water filtration, cooking, etc. and I'll inventory what I bring. I can't have anything too fancy in part because I don't have the money, and also in part because I'll drive through Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, and CR. Latin cops shop at traffic stops.

Perhaps make some contacts here at flea markets etc. to resell knock-off designer labelled jeans etc. that you could mail piece-meal??

Nice dude!

Grab some extra large pillows, in case you need to sleep in your car. And some sheets and blankets too. Enjoy your trip! :hippie:

I made it to Costa Rica, and I made it back to the United States. Barely. I thought I would put out a friendly warning to anyone thinking about transiting through Mexico/Guatemala, DON'T. On the way back, every single day there was something different that was going to kill me. I won't say the towns or the cartels involved, but I met a few big players. I made it through, some real Dios me guia shit.

Something happened in a town. As I was driving out of that town, I was thinking of telling the cops (check points everywhere), but when I drove by they had 100% of them inside the oxxo, a convenient excuse to not hear 50 shots. It is suicidal to have no one pulling security, unless they are corrupt.

I also was directly stopped at cartel checkpoint. I should have seen the signs driving through the town. People look afraid, there's zero remotely attractive women, only old people. I was only driving through, they walked into the road and stopped me. They let all cars pass except me, obviously a potential target. Having absolutely nothing visible of value saved me, several visible signs of poverty, and my car had a lot of visible damage. I was surprised that out of 8 people not a single one had a visible tattoo. New kids I guess. The head honcho told me in Spanish that he was going to get in my car to show me where to park. I just kept repeating no para, solo transit. united estates. He eventually said to the kids in Spanish that I don't speak any Spanish and it wouldn't be worth it, so they let me go. The policy in that town was very clearly to simply smash and grab anything of value, so I should have seen those indications.

That made me more wary than the other things, I guess because I knew there Wasn't much I could do. On the highway near the USA I saw another cartel checkpoint. before the checkpoint I saw remains of a pile of 4 burning tires, right after a sharp turn on the mountain. there was also a junk car that was burnt. They target cell phone dead zones as checkpoints. They always have Lookout | checkpoint | action | checkpoint | lookout. they were only interested in the semi truck drivers. They had 2 trucks stopped, their bosses hadn't paid protection money. I'm guessing they had until dark to figure it out, I saw the truck driver panicking and trying to call someone on his phone. They used private security companies and off duty police at the cartel checkpoints. To a tourist they look legitimate that way. I knew the security guy was cartel because his expression/eyes. It's too obvious.

There were other incidents, but I can't say them without specifics. It was constant in Mexico.

El Salvador was great. It's like a tropical Texas, and everything is super cheap. $6 subway subs, $3 for a car wash, everything is in USD. Nicaragua is trash. The people are great, but the officials are all corrupt. The head honcho of immigration (3 stars on his shoulder) took $2500 Nicaraguan (60usd) and put $15 USD in my passport to stamp it. Be warned for Nicaragua, the police and gov officials are always treating themselves to gifts. In Nicaragua the police and corrupt politicians replaced the cartels, so now The only types of police/gov are corrupt ones, new ones, and super fupas.

This is sketchy. I was worried when i first heard of your plans.
Glad you made it ok in the end ,and are back "home" safe

Id like to hear more about el salvador and how much you enjoyed/how nice it was. Ive heard anecdotally they have progressed and came a long way, in comparison to their neighbors, the last few years, in cleaning the place up, in general

There are a ton of people who speak English in El Salvador relative to other Latin America countries. El Salvador was about 6-7 hours to transit. I only stayed a total of 2 days from the whole trip, so I didn't get the most detailed look. No hotels, only 1 overnight. No beaches, restaurants, or other touristy things. I mostly ate subway to avoid food poisoning risk.

At the peak of El Salvador's cartel violence there were over 100 murders per 100,000 people. Currently Ecuador is at 51 per 100k (2025 stat). Supposedly the cartels really kicked off once the USA started deporting people. They were hardened in con-college (prison), and had seen more organized cartels like MS13. The Risk for El Salvador is no longer cartels, but if they will turn into Nicaragua. Nicaragua just announced that they will not be holding elections for the next cycle. In my opinion the CCP, radical Islam, and the Mexican/Latin cartels are 3 prongs to the same tool. I was surprised to see a youtube video that showed Mexican cartel influence in Ecuador, but I guess it makes sense if they have to ship their wares to the USA to make any real money.

Traffic is definitely bad during normal working hours. I almost ran into a semi-truck because he was stopped in the middle of the road. Normally they throw a tree branch in the road to give you a heads up, but there was nothing. Just rounded the turn, and slammed on the brakes. The E-blinkers are heavily used in Latin America as a "please don't rear-end me" signal, so I turned those on to warn the cars behind me. It felt like a final destination scene. In every Latin America country, it is suicidal to look away from the road. No picking out a new song on your phone or any of that, you'll fly off a cliff.
