What was your first home computer * 1

Mine was the C64. It was pretty dated already when I got it, but my family didn't have much money and we got it handed down from an aunt and uncle when they got their brand new Packard Bell with windows 3.1.

I remember having a poker game and the guy would say "don't blow smoke in my face!". I was too young to know what I was doing but I always thought computing in general was cool. We had all the peripherals with it too like the printer and joy stick.

I always wanted one of those things, just got to play them at a few friends houses.

My step dad had computers about that I was allowed to use. Memorably we had a Toshiba with a 286 processor and then an IBM with a 386. This was with windows 1 and 2. Would boot to DOS and load games from there. Doom, Leisure Suit Larry, Monkey Island, Alone in the Dark and the like were hot releases.

A lady that baby sat me and my buddy sometimes had a dos prompt computer too. We always played this ski or die game.

My dad had a Sinclair Spectrum when I was very small. My first one was an Amstrad Mega PC with it's built in Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. I already had a NES and a GB but this was my first real computer.

Wow I've never seen that before. Built in Genesis is fucking awesome.

I don't know if they existed outside the UK. Amstrad was a British company. It's how Alan Sugar, the guy on the UK version of The Apprentice, made his money.

I had an AT&T IBM clone in 86 with MS-dos. It was good for word  processing, spreadsheets, and data base, but couldn't crunch big numbers. People were buying a math coprocessor for that.

We played fantasy baseball when it was still called Rotisserie League from the book by Dan Okrent and his buddies who invented it. We used a spreadsheet to do the statistics. We had to input  all the data each week for every player in the National League from the USA Today.

I started with a C16. That was a long time ago. The monitor didn't have color, only shades of green. Then came the C64, which was really good. But my best memories are of the Amiga 500. I played Monkey Island for hours and hours. Good old days.

Ah the good old C64... wasn't my first computer, but my brothers and I used to play a lot on it. The first game I remember is Mars1 and Zak Mckracken, which was awesome!

while contracting as a software developer I tried using the sony vaio in 2000, but it was only minimally useful, although I was able to demonstrate my conversationally interactive multimedia bots on it


after which I experimented with minimal hardware configurations, and I am currently working on a 10 year old acer windows netbook and a tiny android phone.

Damn that's cool.

When I was a kid I had a fascination with Macintosh computers. We got to mess around with them very minimally in elementary school. I remember the older kids got to play with these ones and I was so jealous and I feel like I never actually got to.

C64 - but the floppy drive was on backorder EVERYWHERE, so I had to leave the computer on whenever I typed in some insanely long program from a magazine. It took months to get the floppy drive... it was insanely slow to load a store bought game, but it sure was cool to not have to retype a hundred lines of code every time you turned the computer off!
