Anyone else heat their house with wood? * 1

I've got a wood stove it's our main heat source for the winter, electric baseboards for back up. I love wood heat for a few reasons, it's generally cheaper than other forms of heat and I can get free wood with a little effort. My dad does side jobs cutting trees down for people so I go help, he gets paid I get a bunch of wood.

Anyone else here burn wood for heat?

I use to. But the city here banned it. Made us change fire places out. My parents still burn wood in their fireplace out in the sticks they live in.  But wood isnt the cheapest heat source here. Cost about 1.22 in natural gas to heat a 1500 square feet home for a day.

I've never really broken it down by the day, but $1.22 per day seems incredibly cheap.

I buy around 6-8 cords of wood a year depending on how much I cut or get for free. A cord is $135 delivered so worse case around $1,080 for a winter. That is certainly more than $1.22 a day.

Since you live in Canada you live in a colder climate. Because of shall fracking, natural gas is incredible cheap and forced. Same reason why plastic recycling isn't economical visable,  precursor is a byproduct and 2 ot 3 bucks a barrel.

I do love fire and burning wood, something healing about it. Have you heard of chip drop to get your wood.

I put out a couple of chimney fires on a century old chimney by quickly stuffing wet toilet paper into the cracks around an airtight stove addition. I let it go out then restarted it to burn more creosote, luckily it worked lol, the neighbors were ready to call the fire dept but desisted cuz no flames appeared.

I just moved into a place with a wood burning stove and a pile of wood that needs to be chopped up. I have freshly restored axe that I look forward to using but I have all summer to get that situated.

Sweet! The best part of burning wood is the amount of free heat you can get with a little effort. Less and less people burn a lot of times on market place people will have a tree down and give it away for free or even pay to clean it up and not many other people usually do it. Me and my dad cut down 3 big maples for a neighbor she paid us and we got all the wood was a Saturday's work but each got paid well and I got around 4 face cords

My fam in southern Oregon burns wood on the reg.  They get hard ass madrone and some lighter woods to kindle, either chopped on property or by the cord.

One sister lived in a bona fide log cabin, sole heat source was a wood burning pot belly.  Because of the box-layout, it kept the place TOASTY.

The other sister and mama have some sweet modern wood burning fireplaces that use catalytic converters to filter the air you can fan-pump back into the house, and slow burn the dense wood for max efficiency.  Those things are crazy awesome.  But they're somewhat spendy to install.  If memory serves, I think they were around $10,000 when they got put in.  I might be off though, cause it wasn't my buy (and it was also two decades ago).

I have a traditional crappy open fireplace with a brick chimney, but I also live in SoCal, where we don't often need extensive supplementary heat.  I love burning the fireplace, but because the bedrooms are on the complete opposite end of the house from the living room + fireplace, it's not always a great solution, because I hate having a raging fire and then having to douse the coals... but leaving the coals on and then hitting the central HVAC for night-heat in the bedrooms, creates a bit of negative pressure that can suck CO/smoke back in from the residual burn in the fireplace, which is obviously not ideal.

Fire for the win though, ferreal! :yesnod:

Hell ya the new stoves are totally different eh? Growing up we had this old cast iron wood stove you had to crank pretty open air flow would be just roaring. The one in my house now  you have to get it rolling pretty hot for 15 min or so then damper it right down and get the secondary burn from the heat exchangers on the top, totally different philosophy
