"Jaundice bitters" were a category of 19th-century patent medicines, typically composed of a mixture of herbs, roots, and barks steeped in a spirituous liquor, such as alcohol.[2] These preparations were marketed as "cure-alls" or "stomachics," intended to improve digestion, cleanse the blood, and treat a wide array of ailments including jaundice, liver complaints, dyspepsia, headaches, and general debility.[1] [2]

The term "bitters" itself refers to the medicinal application of substances characterized by their bitterness, which were believed to exert a tonic effect on the digestive organs.[2] In the case of "jaundice bitters," the name specifically highlighted their purported ability to treat liver-related conditions, which were often colloquially associated with jaundice.[1] [2] These products often contained high concentrations of alcohol—sometimes exceeding 25 percent—which served as both a solvent for the herbal ingredients and a preservative.[1] [2]
The industry was characterized by intense competition and frequent legal disputes over trademarks and "original" formulas, as seen in the history of Moses Atwood’s Jaundice Bitters, which was manufactured in various forms by multiple entities throughout the mid-to-late 1800s.[1] Following the passage of the 1906 Food and Drug Act, many of these bitters were exposed by government chemists as having little to no medicinal value, often consisting of little more than sweetened, colored, and flavored alcoholic water, leading to the decline of the industry.[2]
