Research Questionnaire: Gymnopilus Species Wood-Lover Paralysis * 4
    #29508386 -

The following initial questions are strictly for ongoing research purposes, and are not intended to encourage the consumption of Gymnopilus species. This data is intended to potentially compliment the recent paper titled, “Wood-lover paralysis”: Describing a toxidrome with symptoms of weakness caused by some lignicolous “wood-loving” Psilocybe mushrooms.

Questionnaire:

1. Have you experienced psychedelic effects somewhat similar to Psilocybe cubensis after ingesting a Gymnopilus species?

2. What species did you consume? (You can answer "Unknown" if it fits better)

3. How would you characterize the overall experience briefly?

4. Did you experience at any time during or soon after the experience difficulty breathing, inhibited movement, or any other negative symptoms? If yes, please elaborate.

5. Have you experienced any negative symptoms on two or more occasions with a Gymnopilus species?

6. Do you know someone who has ingested a Gymnopilus species and experienced wood-lovers paralysis or similar negative effects?

7. Do you have any recommendations to further advance the research on this topic?

Thank You!

This is great research you are doing!

The Waraitake (Big Laughing Mushroom) is a very deserving psilocybian Gymnopilus that deserves extra Shroomery attention!

I saw your post about fantazutake...Japanese is a vague language.
The problem was that Gymnopilus spectabilis is refered to as オオワライタケ(oowaraitake)
The kanji(chinese looking characters)translates to "burst of laughter mushroom."

I went back to check out the shrooms I put at the beginning of this thread.
I'll post in about an hour with pics and spore print.

Quote:
Fourteen members of Gymnopilus contain psilocybin,[3] although their bitter taste often deters recreational users. These species include G. aeruginosus, G. braendlei, G. cyanopalmicola,[4] G. dilepis,[5]G. intermedius, G. junonius, G. luteofolius, G. luteoviridis, G. luteus, G. purpuratus,[4] G. subearlei,[4] G. subpurpuratus,[4] G. validipes and G. viridans.[6] Subspecies of G. junonius from Japan are reported to contain psilocybin, while some western North American members do not.

Psychoactive Gymnopilus?

Burst-of-laughter mushroom? :rotfl:

Guys, picture that: psilocybian mushrooms of the Gymnopilus genus, probably cultivatable, that Japan thought appropriate to assign the name Burst-out-laughing Mushoom to. We as -the- Shroomery gotta be able to do something with this.

Do we have any members active who have in any way interacted with psychoactive Gymnopilus, usage, hunting, photos, cultivation? Dump anything Psilocybian Gymnopilus in the Gymnopilus Megathread and let us for the rest do our best to help Myco-A-E with his questionnaire!

Billy Ze Kick and the Crazy Kids - Eat Me

An afternoon of autumn
We found a way to locomotion
So we went to the bush
The fields were wet and sufficiently acidic
It was a good time to go pick mushrooms

(Chorus:)
Eat me! Eat me! Eat me! (x2)
It's the song of the psilo that begs
Who plays with souls
And open the aspects of perception

It was raining a lot that day
Fortunately we had hoods
And especially solid pouchs
There cows looked at us
With an air complicit and relaxed
There was more than just to get started
To ensure the picking

(Chorus:)
Eat me! Eat me! Eat me! (x2)
It's the song of the psilo that begs
Who plays with souls
And open the aspects of perception

Is it a good one?
But no, he's not a good one
Because there's no nipple
And then it's too flat
He doesn't have the right color
Let us not be discouraged
Let's open the ears and listen

(Chorus:)
Eat me! Eat me! Eat me! (x2)
It's the song of the psilo that begs
Who plays with souls
And open the aspects of perception

O you, you walk like a duck
But it's better to see him
Oh, fuck, my back hurts
It would need a detector
Here's a firecracker's butt
It must be a very good field
Or there are some that have already passed
And surely they all crawled

It's definitely known for it
Fucking how do you want
Now it's too late
We're well advanced
We have all wet feet

Eat me! Eat me! Eat me! (x2)

Instead of crushing me
Why don't you eat me

An afternoon of autumn
We found a way to locomotion
So we went to the bush
The fields were wet and sufficiently acidic
It was a good time to go pick mushrooms

(Chorus:)
Eat me! Eat me! Eat me! (x2)
It's the song of the psilo that begs
Who plays with souls
And open the aspects of perception

Station to the descent (x3)
Down Down
Down Down
Good luck.

I personally have not

Also have a wild patch

Of these

And many prints

There's a 30 page gym cultivation thread that was started 15 months ago.  At least in cultivated specimens, no one has mentioned paralysis.

I have taken Gynmopilus Aerugenosis, and they weren't as bitter as I anticipated. Found them growing on an old pile of wood chips. It wasn't a normal trip as I possibly didn't eat enough, but it was pleasant enough to report here. I took some mycelium from the wood chips and cultivated some which when grown, they looked more like Dilepis, but still did bruise green/blueish. Only had roughly 4-5 fruiting bodies, and did not partake in them because I was more focused on the cultivation process, and they were much smaller than my actual finds in the wood chips. Next time, I will most likely make a tea if I was to partake again, for research purposes, of course.

Until positive proof comes out (may be the tissue I have now) aeruginosus and luteofolius are just misidentified but the same mushroom. I however have an undescribed gym.

If you have an un-described Gymnopilus species, you would be doing a service to mushroom identification and mushroom hunters by having its full genome sequenced.

I found a formal paper written about Gymnopilus cf. dilepis from China supposedly containing both psilocybin and muscarine. More people should probably read this and provide comments about the accuracy of the claims made.

Investigation and toxin identification of a poisoning incident caused by Gymnopilus dilepis in Yunnan Province

Year: 2024

DOI:10.13590/j.cjfh.2024.01.014

Only the abstract paragraph of this paper is presently available. If someone out there can get it, can you please attach it here?

Related Paper Chart:

Detection and Identification in Reported Mushroom Poisoning Incidents — China, 2012–2023

Folks should keep in mind that some people consider Gymnopilus dilepis to represent a species complex (multiple species currently requiring further study), and not a single species.

Footnote: cf. is an abbreviation for the Latin word confer, meaning "compare" or "compare with".

Here is a related publication from China CDC Weekly that lists "Mushroom Poisoning Outbreaks" with number of incidents and number of patients with:

Gymnopilus dilepis
Gymnopilus sp. (A Gymnopilus species not identified to species level)
Psilocybe cubensis
Panaeolus cyanescens
Panaeolus subbalteatus

https://weekly.chinacdc.cn/fileCCDCW/journal/img/cover/7820249b-d118-461d-8034-bb40829c5bfa.pdf

Vol. 7 No. 19 May 9, 2025

I've included this link to help other researchers primarily, and to raise awareness of how some medical professionals view these species. Some of you will no doubt wish to scrutinize the publication. There is a corresponding author listed just above the references section.

G. subspectabilis no negative side effects, no paralysis-- though the effects have a slightly more "intoxicating" or "stoning" feeling. I think this may come from kavalactones. But nothing similar to descriptions of WLP

1. Yes
2. Gymnopilus subspectabilis
3. Similar to Psilocybe cubensis but milder
4. No
5. No
6. No
7a. Look into type of wood. I suspect wood lovers contain different compounds depending on type of wood they fruited on.
7b. Compare fresh and dried gymns, in my experience there is a marked difference
