Ionic compounds do not volatilize; it’s that simple.
Most ionic compounds are nonvolatile under normal conditions due to strong ionic bonding and high lattice energies. Can’t smoke HCl salts, fumarates, ect, only bases, and that’s why.
Psilocybin is a zwitterion witch is also referred to as an “inner salt” as it contains both a negatively charged phosphate group and a positively charged amine. Zwitterions are likewise generally not volatile due to their ionic nature with the presence of both positive and negative charges, which typically leads to higher boiling points and lower vapor pressures compared to neutral molecules. Instead, zwitterions tend to remain stable in solid or aqueous forms rather than transitioning to a gaseous state. They are different from salts in that their nonvolatility, high melting point, and decomposition on heating are intrinsic, not incidental.
This is all evidenced by looking at psilocybins melting point witch is relatively high 220-228 °C along with the fact that it lacks an experimentally observable boiling point, as it would be destroyed by thermal decomposition before it would occur at atmospheric pressure.
Compare that with NN-dmt which has a melting point of only 46°C and a boiling temp is only 60-80°C. NN-dmt’s vapor pressure (3.1X10-4 mm Hg at 25 °C) is >160 million times higher than psilocybin (1.9X10-12 mm Hg at 25 °C).. NN-dmt as a free base is a non ionic neutral molecule and that is why it can volatilize/vaporize.
