Shoebox Pasteurization for Straw Based Substrates * 6

This method of pasteurization is intended to simplify the process for the small home grower. It can be an excellent way to experiment with different percentages of compost or other additives.

Step 1.

Drill a series of drain holes into the bottom of a shoebox with a 3/16 bit and place it into a second unmodified shoebox.





















Step 2.

I usually do this by eye but for the purposes of this demonstration I will measure the substrate ingredients. In this example I will be growing Panaeolus Cyanescens with a target substrate thickness of 2 inches. I aim to have a 2:1 ratio of straw/manure.

Measure 5 Cups of finely shredded straw and 3 cups of manure. I add the straw first with the idea that it will filter the manure and keep it from blocking the drain holes.





















Step 3.

Water is boiled and poured into the shoebox to submerge the substrate. Lids are securely attached and the shoeboxes are insulated with a blanket on top and bottom. Leave to pasteurize for 1 hour.



































Step 4.

Drain by removing the internal shoebox and placing it elevated into a sink. I usually do this in my kitchen but for this demonstration I will be using a tub. Once drained the substrate is thoroughly mixed. After mixing let any excess water drain and place the shoebox back into the other, attach lid and cool to room temperature.





































Step 5.

Mix in your grain spawn.




























This concept can be applied to larger buckets or bins. The substrate can then be transferred to fruiting trays (Maybe I'll include this in a future journal entry). Any further steps are up to your preferred method of casing and fruiting. Here are some fruits using shoebox pasteurization.

Above all, it's ultra easy.

I want to replace straw with miscanthus. This is very good for the environment and can also be used for wood-loving mushrooms!

What a great idea! I work as a gardener and in my area, disposing of ornamental grasses involves quite a bit of driving. Love the idea of feeding them to the mushrooms!:mushroom2::cool: gonna try this out for sure

Another great effect is that miscanthus is very good for the soil, grows in areas where other plants cannot grow, and is almost never polluted. It is at least as effective as wood pellets and can also be used by wood lovers.
