We're getting off-topic with the whole "was he globally known" argument.
Let's focus on what Charlie stood for:

- white supremacy/racism
- willful allowance of people to die from gun violence so he can legally hold his gun
- sexism
- he literally doesn't believe in empathy, which makes him a cold, non-loving person
- child rape victims must deliver the baby, no abortion
- anti-vaccine
- anti-science
- pro delusions via religion

I think it means she assumed the majority of America would not vote for a gay man and she was willing to sacrifice what she thought would have been a better choice to conform with that assumption.
