The future of LSD
    #29200108 -

Here is something I've been thinking about lately:

I wonder about the future of LSD and what its actual importance might be when it comes to therapeutic utility. To put it more simply... What does LSD do for people that mushrooms, 5-MEO-DMT and ketamine don't?

Mushrooms are "natural" and are much safer than LSD, physically. They probably also have a bunch of health benefits outside of the psychiatric benefits. They've been around forever and have as much observed history as any entheogen.

Ketamine is the hot new thing, being fast-tracked to market once its powerful antidepressant and antianxiety effects were discovered clinically. Ketamine seems to be much safer than traditional psychedelics, being more predictable and less likely to cause "bad trips". Ketamine also has the advantage of short duration of action, so people can do sessions in less than an hour like it's just another errand on their list.

LSD comes with an enormous amount of baggage and stigma, and it probably also poses a greater risk when it comes to things like schizophrenia. A big chunk of the population would probably not want to take LSD, no matter how good the research looked.

So, with mushrooms and ketamine quickly becoming staples of western medicine, and people flying across the world to smoke toad venom, I have to ask... What role will LSD play in the future? Why is it important? Is it going to end up being some long-lost mythical drug that people take just for nostalgia?

LSD is a powerful psychedelic and will certainly have a future in mental health therapy.

Yes mushrooms are natural, but I don't know that they are much safer than LSD, as you say. Many of the world's most dangerous and lethal substances are all natural.

LSD, mushrooms (psilocybin), 5-MEO-DMT and ketamine are different drugs and people will react to them differently. To non users they may appear the same, but anyone who has taken them can easily tell the difference. It is not like one of them is going to be the clear 'winner'. Mental heath is not that black and white.

It seems you have a negative opinion of LSD, as many people do. That may come from personal experience or your interpretaion of history.

As I think back to LSD's heyday, I associate it with peace, love, and happiness, great music, Timothy Leary and Ram Dass, hippies, anti-war, social change, racial harmony, and saving the planet. To me, that era is all positive, full of lessons we can still learn from today.

Nowadays people look at that time as a negative stigma, something to laugh at and ridicule, a time better forgotten. I don't know why.

LSD is fine the way it is, although it is being tweaked to be shorter acting, remove hallucinations, etc. and make it a so called better medicine. Yes LSD has a bright future.

Ketamine maybe be the "new hot thing" but any one whose spent some time on the festival scene can tell you it's not as cut and dry as you make it. I've seen far more lives ruined by ketamine then I'd ever want too. Don't get me wrong. I've riden the digital waves of K but that stuff can easily just become hippy heroin.

Personally i hope it's just a stepping stone in research.

The future of lsd is imo, is to essentially start back at it's beginnings but with a different intent. Micro chemistry. Expect more compounds like JRT focusing on neuroplasticity without hallucinating or having involuntary bodily responses.

This is my first time hearing about JRT. That’s amazing. Just swapping the position of the nitrogen in the tryptamine structure makes it less psychedelic, dopaminergic and adrenergic. Sounds really cool… I’d love to try it.

For anyone else interested in the LSD analogue JRT, read the article in Shroomery News, Researchers Develop an LSD Analogue with Potential for Treating Schizophrenia. Very interesting where the research is going.

Mushrooms ARE physically safer than LSD. That's not my opinion.

I love LSD and I associate it with all of the same fine things that you associate it with. I'm asking about its future for the general public, as a legal psychiatric drug.

What is the bright future of a drug that is being tweaked to make it better medicine? I'm aware of the various LSD analog projects, but what about regular-ass LSD?

As I said in my first sentence, which you quoted,
"LSD is a powerful psychedelic and will certainly have a future in mental health therapy."

That is my opinion. If you don't agree or have a differing opinion that is perfectly okay, and I don't have a problem with that.

With an 8 hour duration and a severe variation in effect across the population, regular ass lsd is not very likely to be used as is in future medicine (purely my opinion).

The stone wheel of synthetic psychedelic
Research. Much like wheel, the over all shape will last forever i think. But it won't be left as is.

That is a very good point, phi. And the LSD duration can even be up to 12 hours. So it will never just be handed out like other medication. That would be irresponsible and dangerous.

But there is so much evidence, research, and studies that LSD can be helpful in treating conditions like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Besides rethinking what chemicals are used for those conditions, we need to rethink how they are used therapeutically.

The old model of going to a doctor and saying you have anxiety or are depressed and leaving with the first of a 90 day supply of drugs. Drugs that in most cases do not help, are highly addictive, and must be taken forever unless you are able to get off of them. We would need a new model for psychedelics, especially LSD.

In much the same way psilocybin used therapeutically, in the states where legal, is not just given out to people, they require professionally trained people to oversee their trip to make sure it is productive and safe. LSD would probably require more, perhaps even in a hospital setting. That would have to be worked out. LSD will have to be thought and handled much differently than a benzo or ssri. But I do see LSD in future therapy, because it works. At least I sure hope so, for the sake of the many folks suffering from mental illness.

Thats the trick. Handling how it's given. There is an affordability issue as well.

With that duration and level of variety in effect, comes the cost of supervision.

Your talking constant ambulance access, standing nurse at all times, psychiatric professional (s). Monitoring equipment, blood lab contracts, + the cost of synthesis with all of the regulation involved. As a cannabis professional in a highly regulated business. I know first hand how many costs are added when a product becomes regulated.

A single appointment is possibly 40 man hours of highly paid professionals.

Personally I can barely afford therapy lol 😆

So my view in it being tweaked to avoid much of that is optimism.

I hope that there can be a cost effective and simple method of using this chemical family to provide neuroplasticity to all of us who got spicy brains.

And the cannabis tax is nothing compared to the pharmacy tax 🙄. It always goes to the consumer.

Side note: ketamine on ( in a white paper )is ideal due to stability, ease of manufacture and it is already considered fairly safe as an anesthetic in certain situations. Lsd dosnt get that on paper benefit of the doubt. Most studies have to start the introduction with excusing the stigma associated due to individuals like leary. You see a bit of rave talk in ketamine literature but nothing compared to the exclusive nature of the common white paper lsd intro

We know that LSD has all sorts of uses in psychiatry, but the the process involved in getting a drug to market is no easy task. Somebody is going to have to dump insane amounts of money into the project with a specific goal in mind as far as FDA approval.

Let me give an example...

It's very hard at this point to bring a new SSRI or benzo to market, because we already have so many different ones. It would be hard to create a new SSRI that does something different than the other dozen or so on the market.

One of the newer SSRIs, Pristiq, is basically a newer version of Effexor that skips liver metabolism. That's important for people with certain liver issues, but pretty worthless for everyone else. Pristiq doesn't really do anything that Prozac doesn't do.

I worry LSD will suffer the same fate.

This guy is a troll.

And LSD has no medicinal benefits. Psilocybin has heaps.

LSD will never be legalised, it also makes for a break from reality for 12 hours. Make of it what you will.

The LSD psychotherapy thing especially Stanislav Grof, I think they chose the wrong one. It's psilocybin that will help trauma. Success story LSD psychotherapy is probably because the people were healing anyway or they overdosed for their biochemistry and it kind of flipped out of the unconscious waters like a fish.

Psilocybin instantly, pretty much as soon as it hits, flushes traumas. Quite violently. It purges. Some of the victims out there actually... they have no chance without psilocybin. No amount of situational triggering or talk therapy is going to even dent some psychopaths (from childhood rapes and beatings), in fact they might even get turned away from talk therapy and for good reason, the problem is insoluble, without psilocybin... Yes I speak from experience.

LSD has been used for psychotherapy for decades.
It's extremely useful and productive for certain applications.

All psychedelics can cause trauma in some people at certain doses and in certain environments and situations. Even mushrooms.

All psychedelics show promise in treating certain people for certain types of trauma too.

I think LSD is a marvelous drug.

It's marvellous I just got zero abreaction.

Taking psilocybin I dry heaved about 30 times in a row and almost passed out.

LSD is wildly different from mushrooms.

It's duration is 12+ hours. The comments in this thread lead me to believe that some people who are against it here might not have done it, which is totally okay and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's like insulting mushrooms without having done them.

I think that mushrooms are the best psychedelic, but LSD is a completely different thing, and it's still a close second best in my opinion. It's like saying "I have a hammer so I don't need a screwdriver." You don't have to like LSD, it's totally fine to hate it, but you don't need to put it down either. No need to start a pointless fight about it. LSD has its uses, totally different uses than mushrooms.

The future of all psychedelics is for science to one day invent even better drugs that put everything we have now to shame, but so far I haven't seen anything as useful as mushrooms and LSD.

Sorry if it's me that put down LSD, I was a bit shocked by it, in a kind of nice way, kind of 'wait that's not medicine' sort of way. I began taking psychedelics to fix my childhood, so to speak.

It's beautiful and stuff but I don't think the common guy should be considering it as part of say college or a bucket list.

Everything is connected. If we have people abusing that drug with shallow intents and interests I don't know what happens but it can't be helping things.

The 60s must have been insane.

That is a really interesting question, whether there is something unique and distinctly special about LSD or if people latched onto it because it happened to be the first lysergic acid derivative discovered with such a profound effect. I can't help but feel like there's something special about it, but that might be because I've taken it before and I have a connection to it from the experiences I can look back on.

Personally it's better for certain things than mushrooms are. With mushrooms I feel less clearheaded, more like I'm being taken for a ride, but with LSD I can be introspective in a way that is near impossible to achieve sober. That plus how it seems to supercharge my analytical abilities and creative thinking makes it probably my favorite drug ever.
