help! goddamn snails are attacking

ok i have endet up in a bloody war here. i started to see a snail here and there a week ago, i threw them in a bucket with some pure alcohol in it. but they just keep coming and just now i found snail on more sacred important plants so the shit needs to stop now.

any tricks?`i want to be careful with chemicals also since alot of the plants are for consumption, even for food.

couldn't you ring them with some salt? grab a bag of ice melt and ring you plants, house, .

put a 1 foot perimeter of copper tape around your sacred plants- snails can't cross it.  Also diatamaceous earth sprinkled around the Earth surrounding your plants will keep them away.  Pick the snails morning and late evening and drown them in water.  It is an ongoing battle, my friend!  :smile:  Good luck!

Seems like salt works as good and is cheaper and is on hand. But hey, I'm probably wrong

salt will kill them if you sprinkle it on them, but it is a slow and painful death.  You wouldn't want to sprinkle salt all over your garden though, it's not good for the plants.

I actually find the best way to kill them is to instantly smash them with a rock or my foot so they don't know what hit them, but it's easier to drown them in water. :frown:

An old gardening trick I've hear of is to place small containers full of beer around the area. Snails are attracted to the smell, and they crawl right in where the salt in the beer gets 'em. :evil:

^^^ what they said. beer, copper wire and diatamacious earth all work. i've found the copper to work the best though.

I've also noticed a greater number of snails around. I heard of the salt, but I agree with Phishgirl, it is cruel. I heard somewhere if you put a saucer of beer out, they will be attracted to the beer and drown. Oh wait that's cruel too. Oh well, they'll be drunk, maybe they won't realize what's happening!

Oh come on!!! salt is cruel but drowning is OK? The point was that they would turn away from the salt that was like a mote around the plants. No killing at all.

Hey how about that? Just build a mote, with a draw-bridge and everything!!!

If you don't want to be "cruel" than put them in a bucket and drop them at work or a park or something.

OK, if your talking outdoor grow, what you wana do is go get some wire screen.. then you simply cut this into 4 inch strips or so, you bury 3 inches of it around the area you want to protect, so what you have is a little one inch high fence. The snails underside is very sensative and they will not cross the fence. Once you get most of them outa the garden, non will enter.

Just reminded me of a really bad old joke.

that's a similar joke to the one in trading places with eddie murphy and dan ackroid... if not the same... funny stuff the first time i was old enough to get it (after having seen the movie tons of time when i was a kid)

i'd train birds to eat them.... then you wouldnt have to buy bird feed, id be the jam.
