Very lofty.
You're forgetting that a considerable part of society consists of a bunch of dumb jackasses and some of them are pretty sick & twisted, and your 'reflection, experience and education' will culminate in abuse, violence and damaging behavior.

We in Europe have this sentimental thing where we protect people and society against hate speech etc.
It's civilised.

Problem is who gets to decide hate speech.

What's hate speech to you might not be hate speech to me.

Censored is the complete blocking of information. Also, I'm not meaning ALL information. Just knowledge deemed dangerous/critical.

For example, I don't think every person on the planet should know how major explosives work let alone be able to procure the necessary materials.(unless you go to work/research in said field.)

I wonder what kids look at on the internet nowadays?
I would bet they look at some weird stuff! They would just be looking around, but they would see some pretty weird stuff.
I know I would have clicked here and there and it would have lead me down some weird rabbit holes.

Now I find people saying haven't you seen it, or you can see this on the internet and I usually reply I don't look at stuff like that on the internet, sorry.

So I think I would just keep a few of the laws at the moment, I would protect kids more but I don't know how?

I do worry about bots and lies on the internet.
Especially when politicians lie or don't tell the whole truth or mislead people.

I don't like hatred either, you shouldn't be allowed to spread hatred.
No racist points of views, or homophobic or any kinds of nastiness.

I'd bet it's less weird then when I was a kid. We had the pain Olympics faces of death and there was no joke this flash game me and my best friend played where you had a nude woman chained up in your basement. We forgot to feed her and she was like a rotting corpse next We played. The internet before regulation was crazy

Obviously I have no problem with sheltering children but I feel we should be allowed to traumatize adults with whatever bad language raunchy sex stuff gratuitous violence we want.

Even offensive opinions but obviously I draw the line with inciting hatred. You should be allowed to hate but I don't think you should be allowed to explain to others how they should be hating as well.

No human should have the power to decide that for other people.

How would you feel if I told you there were certain things you could not say?

Who cares how he feels, you feel, or anyone feels?  Societal rules aren't based on feelings.

Rules all originally came from people's feelings.  We have laws on the books against murder because the sight of a bloody murder victim elicited strong feelings in our ancestors.

Also: can one person dictate to another person what he can and cannot say?

Societal rules are about coexisting.  Murder is pretty much the antithesis of coexisting.  Feelings don't really play into it.

Yes, one person can dictate to another person what he can and cannot say.  It happens every day in this country.  Every parent does this with their kids.  Every teacher does it.  This happens all the time.  To believe otherwise is to live in a fairytale world.

Only some of them.  Others express people's sense of morality.

You can't say you know for sure what prompted our ancestors to outlaw murder.  To do so you would literally have to travel back in time and then ask them.

I feel that a lot of laws are based on people's innate sense of morality, which to me is closely related to feelings.  They are both subjective.

Quote:
Yes, one person can dictate to another person what he can and cannot say.

I should have been more clear.  I meant to say that one person should not be able to dictate to another person what he can say.

Except the relationship between the government and its citizens isn't the same as the ones between teacher and student, or parent and child.

If you really believe the government can dictate to its people what they can say, then you are against freedom of speech.

You have actually made me think about the origin of laws.  I have always thought that laws came from something subjective like feelings or morality.  You say that it's so that we can coexist. This sounds like we consciously thought about the benefits of having laws, realized that they were necessary, and then we decided to have them.  I believe this is wrong.

It isn’t fairytale world; it’s imagination land. :gooby:

Human beings actually have several protective mechanisms, through which they are censoring themselves, from sensory overload and emotional trauma.
