Depressive symptoms from microdosing within days of 2g trip - why?
    #27679151 -

Long time lurker first time poster, so apologies if I've made any noob errors in my comment. As the subject suggests, I had some strong depressive symptoms that resulted from ingesting 400mg of psilocybe cubensis 3 days after what was a wonderfully blissful 2g trip. Having recently completed my first successful grow & harvest, I've been experimenting with microdosing for a few weeks & prior to this experience had nothing but beautifully calm & blissful effects from each microdose. On this occasion I ingested 200mg and noticed that I felt some significant & unusually depressive symptoms, despite being in quite an upbeat & calm state of mind prior to consumption. For further context I'm ordinarily very content and not depressed. Given I'd never experienced this feeling from any of my previous microdoses, I wondered if it would dissipate if I ingested a further 200mg, which perhaps might bring on a greater sense of well-being. Well the exact opposite occurred, with my depressive symptoms simply becoming amplified. These disappeared within 3 hours and I was back to normal and feeling fine.

The only other time I had experienced anything like this was after ingesting a substantial amount of MDMA two weekends in succession, resulting in 5 days of deep & unusual depression after the second weekend. So I'm guessing my experience with the microdose on this occasion has something to do with the effect ingesting 2g of cubes three days prior had on my neurotransmitters / brain / gut chemistry, which perhaps takes several days to reset itself to result in a desirable effect from ingestion?

I have since allowed a week to pass and ingested a further 300mg from the same batch that resulted in my depressive symptoms, and once again felt nothing but a calm state of bliss & gratitude.

I'm very interested in any anecdotal or published data on what might cause this radical difference in experience, as I've also had a friend who had depressive symptoms from her first 400mg microdose, despite not having ever ingested psilocybin prior. Any info or comments would be greatly appreciated!

An half-assed explanation with zero references:

MDMA makes you feel good NO MATTER WHAT. That flood of serotonin then screws up your brain chemistry, and often leads to the depression that you described.

Psilocybin doesn't make you feel good or bad. It just removes filters and thought patterns, and makes you more receptive/sensitive to what's going on around and inside of you.

The supposed mechanism for treating depression or PTSD with psilocybin is completely different from anti-depressants, or even MDMA. The theory is that takes your brain out of the usual thought patterns, and allows it to rewire and properly percieve new experiences.

So there's nothing stopping you from feeling depressed, especially on a lower dose. If you're forced to be in touch with certain thoughts, emotions, or perceptions, then that might cause you to get depressed- situationally depressed that is, not suffering from a serotonin crash.

Most people, including those who suffer from bipolar depression, find that occasionally consuming mushrooms helps them feel better, and more stable, over the long run. That doesn't mean that you'll always feel better in the moment while under their influence. They're simply not a "feel good no matter what" drug. That, coupled with the tolerance spikes, is likely why they're not really addictive.

Tolerance and potency are also tricky to nail down. It's therefore possible that the dose that triggered some depressed feelings hit much stronger or much weaker than the others.

Interesting, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I guess we're still very much in the early stages of understanding the precise mechanisms of how psilocybin interacts with us individually.

Psilocybin and other various enthiogenic compounds illicit a "serotonergic cascade" in the users brain. Things like lsd particularly look on a molecular level exactly the same as serotonin. This is why and how these molecules can be so effective in humans because we have very effective receptor sites for them to bind to and thus be metabolised.

Even though these chemicals can help treat things like depression over the long term they will also still cause a profound spike and then dip in endogenous serotonin levels (you're at homeostasis, then your high, then you're low, then you're back to normal).

That being said, 4g of dried PE is a potent dose for the most part and more than likely you just felt the burn out of those serotonin pumps because even the micro dose is still activating this kind of activity... Albeit on a lesser scale.

Personally I clear my head for at least 7 days prior and typically still feel this dip in affect for 2-4 days more often than not.

Perhaps there are external factors contributing to your depression?
