What is "Jelly Roll'?

Is it some old school hippy slang that I'm too young to understand?  I've heard it mentioned in at least two songs.  What are they refering to?

From Grateful Dead's Dupree's Diamond Blues:

"Well, baby baby wants a gold diamond ring,

From Van Morrison's And It Stoned Me:

Yeah that could be. I'd guess that both Grateful Dead and Van Morrison were heavily influenced by jazz.

I think we should start calling potheads (ourselves?) "vipers" again (for the hissing sound, i guess) - it just sounds so cool - old jazz lingo

I dont know if this has anything to do with it,but back in high school I played the set in Jazz Band,and we played a song called Jelly Roll.
