Reishi not fruiting

Hi,

here is my first Reishi block.

Mycelium grow extremely strongly on grain spawn and also on the saw dust fruiting block. It was fully colonized and grew all the way to the top of the bag, even though there was not substrate. But it did not form antlers in the bag so after about 3-4 weeks I decided to cut off the top of the bag and waited for another 2 weeks. Also no antlers formed. Then I cut of the flappy top of the mycelium, ending up with the block as it looks now, only perfectly white on the edges. Meanwhile it shows some yellow darker spots.

Any idea what went wrong? What should I do now? Just give up with this block?

The strain was sold by a professional dealer, so should be fine.

It is Ganoderma lucidum MG11500.

Lucidum is one of the easiest to fruit. It does take time. Is your bag drying out? That bag appears to have alot of abnormal stuff going on. I guess my best answer is more time and make sure it stays hydrated.

The bag is placed in a fruiting chamber with > 90 % rel. humidity. Should not be dry. It is fully covered in very firm mycelium. Does it make any sense to spray this? Seems strange to me. Well, before I cut the bag there was nothing strange going on, all just pure white and firm mycelium, but no antlers. Maybe I should have just waited longer. Now I will just let it sit in the chamber and see what will happen. With my next bags I will simply leave the bag closed and wait longer than 3 weeks for antlers to form.

The yellow stuff is just metabolites. Nothing to worry about.

Where are you? Reishi is a warmer weather (20+ C)  fruiter.

I am in central Germany, the fruiting chamber has usually around 20 C.
I have Shitake, Lionsmane and Reishi in there.
Should be fine right?

It's fruiting now. Finally. Took longer than expected. Maybe 1,5 - 2 months now.

next time, don't open the bag and keep it warm (25°C)
the antlers will start to form in the bag. when they have a nice size, you can cut open the bag just below the top of the antler and they will fan out.
high humidity and temperature are the trick.

it starts when getting oxygen/carbondioxide ratio is higher.

Should I try taking it out of the fruiting chamber for that purpose or simply open the door a bit for more FAE?

The antler jsut kept growing longer and longer, so I took it out of the fruiting chamber. Then I think it began to fan out where the knots are, so I put it back into the chamber. Then it stopped and continued growing vertically as before. Now I took it out again. What should I do to get it to fan out?

the antlers just keep on growing without fanning out. Should I take the block out of the fruiting chamber, or even place it in the garden? I am in middle European climate.

I don't know why it isn't fanning out, but I just wanted to mention, putting blocks outside has worked for me in the past.  I had some blocks start growing trich on them, so I put them in full shade in the back yard, buried in woodchips without about a inch covering the tops, and I kept it wet.  They fruited, not super well, but they fruited and fanned out.  This was during Summer, can't remember exactly when.

ok, I thought they are supposed to form conks, but your comment suggests it doesnt really matter, if they are grown simply for consumption right?
In that case I don't mind them keeping on growing. I want to dry them and use for tea. Is their any information known with regard to differences in medicinal properties of conk vs. antlers?

Hi Dr Ivan, nice antlers you have there. I'm in the middle of my first few bags of reishi too. I havent been able to grow antlers, just in conk-like form.
From What I understand, high CO2 equals antlers and high O2 equals conks. I'm thinking your grow area does not have enough fresh air being brought in, regardless of the bag being cut open. You had even mentioned that you took them out and they started to conk, then you put it back and it went back to antler formation.  Sounds like a FAE issue to me. But again, I'm new to them myself. Keep us updated please, very curious....

Thank you for your feedback. I will begin strong fanning of fresh air now into the fruting chamber several time per day and observe what happens. Theoretically it should form conks then I guess.

I will post pics along the way.

I am wondering, if it should be preferred to continue growing antlers as long as possible before forming conks. Shouldnt the total biomass be larger in the end?
