Are Hallucinogenics The Future Of Mental Health Treatment?
By Steve Goldstein

Psychedelic drugs tend to fit into a very clear niche in American culture.

Stories about Timothy Leary, LSD and bad trips have dominated the narrative when most think of psychedelia. But, recently, scientists have been doing a lot more research into whether use of the drugs can help people dealing with mental illness or physical ailments.

Earlier this month, voters in Denver decided to decriminalize the use of psilocybin mushrooms — popularly known as magic mushrooms.

Author Michael Pollan explored the broader topic in his book, "How To Change Your Mind: What The New Science Of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression And Transcendence."

He's visiting the Mesa Arts Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a conversation on the subject. The Show reached out to talk about this growing field of study.

Not as long as officials continue to refer to them as hallucinogens.

Officials know almost nothijg about hallucinations verses visions and the personality and self that is the whole person.

What they do know is culture and social expectations.  They have freedom to have power over people and know little other than getting by.  There's so much religious and political bullshit that there is little room for a less attached approach.

The only reason psycs are getting attention now is because there is proof in brain scans that the default mode network gets less active with these drugs.  It'd take a lot of new approaches in 'set in their way' establishments thinking.

They say it's too much dopamine or too little seratonin.  Next they'll say it's default mode network over activity.  The brain still has many secrets.

A huge issue is that old people believe a lot of the propaganda.  They think these drugs or all drugs, that are 'recreational' are just poisons that people abuse.  They really need a trip.  Mental health centers are not healthy places.  It's mostly pretenscious people that want power and authority over all behaviour.  They don't even call it mental health but behavioural healthcare.  It's the strong arm of culture.  Felony probation was more stress but less restrictive.  At least in jail you can be who you are and there is no authority over your personality.

It's too frightening for the establishment of mental health behavioural control to let people be a little wild.  Same folks that used shock treatment on homosexuals and lobotomy on 'unruley' kids to make them 'conform' to social expectations.
