Camping Vs. Glamping * 1

Me and the wife never really have the chance to go out camping, i dont think i have since i was a boyscout or the few times for a family get together when i was young
I use to love it and wanted to get back to it if time permits this summer for a nice get away "trip"
I find things like this

And think thats pretty cool as well but maybe thats getting too out of touch with campimg as some claim it to be "Glamping"

The label doesnt matter as long as it's enjoyable for you.

I prefer throwing on a pack and getting as far from other people and technology as possible when camping though.

Thats why i see the downfall of it
It seems to take the enjoyment out of the whole experince trying to connect with nature
Still being held down buy a single place instead of being free about it

Really depends how adventurous your wife is.

I like both types, typical tent camping as well as backcountry. Backcountry is more exotic but is more work and more risky (predators, remoteness) but u can see some amazing places. Typical camping is cool but you will likely be near roads or other people camping. Different experiences.

One of my favorite is remote car camping. So u have a little of both worlds, the convinence of your car with the remoteness similar to backcountry. For this type of camping, u need an offroad vehicle. A small trailer might work but just an offroad car would be best.

Back country is what im use to for old archery trips and hiking
Wife is down for whatever (one reason i married her lol)

Nice.

If u like backcountry, u basically need two main items. An offroad vehicle (some trails u can hike to from a road thou) and nice internal frame backpacks. Lots of selection out there. And of course a nice sleeping bag, tent, warm clothes.

Maybe get an RV in the future, do some backcountry now since its less costly :wink:

They just put up a glamping sign near a cabin we have in canon city CO. After tent camping a couple of years ago (for the last time) I'll never tent camp again. My back hurt like a motherfucker and something really big was right outside my tent late at night. Plus the cabin we have is in the wilderness anyway. I like heat, a bed, kitchen, sturdy shelter, and a shower. As far as glamping in that tipi, have at it, at least there's heat and a bed.

I’ve slept in cars on multiple day fishing trips and tents with the whole festival deal.  Idc what anyone says I like my modern luxuries.

I either want to go full on primitive or stay in an RV or something. Crowded campings are the worst of both worlds

I've realized that the word "camping" really varies from geographic location to location.

Here, for example, you can take a smaller motorhome to about 70 different lakes within a 2 hour radius.  50 of those are what we call "forestry campgrounds". Meaning, the only amenities are an outhouse and a fire pit. No power. No cell service. They have no fee, no people babysitting them, etc.  Most are very "backcountry"...many have some questionable roads getting in(4x4 recommended but is doable in a motorhome if you have knowledge of how to 4x4).  And usually, at many, you wont be camping with another soul.  So if you bring a small motorhome to such a location...is it really "glamping"?

You get a comfortable bed to sleep in and some heat at night if needed.  But no question about it, you are in the thick of back country, isolated.

I camped in such locations in a tent like this for many, many years.  Hearing bears roaming and crashing around me and my newborn at night, it can be a little unsettling for some.

I upgraded my family to a shit old tent trailer.  It's nice not to sleep on the ground.  I dont have heat or power, and it still feels like roughing it, but where it really shines is when it is pissing rain.  Me and the family dont have to be huddled in a wet tent.  Now, we are sitting at a small table playing board games :smile:. Waking up in the morning when it's usually around 5-10C and firing up my propane burner and making coffee, sitting at the table....its very nice.  :smile:

I do a lot of camping every summer.  It's what I look forward to all year.  It's my one true place to unplug, reset and unwind.

If there is no power or water/sewage hookup
then the motorhome is not that much more glamorous than a smaller camper

my mother and step-father got a little bowler camper a few years ago along the bed reasoning
they want to keep getting out into the wilderness and away from their worklives and stuff
but it gets to a point where sleeping on the ground or in the back of a pickup truck is not great for aging, arthritic bones

bring it up because my mother is pretty critical of glamping in the sorts of areas where there are hookups for an RV

in contrast, do not personally enjoy camping
like living in a house near nature, but the relative 'dirtiness' of camping drives my OCD crazy
gotta be able to wash and shower regularly

but my personal perception of camping is that it 'should' be a tent and a sleeping bag
but rather than any practical camping experience informing that, it comes out of perceptions of what life around here would theoretically be like post-apocalypse
may be able to barricade my home as a base, but walking trips for resources beyond basic water and hunting would prolly require a several day journey to a cityscape with sleeping in the wilds in between

Agreed.  I'm slowly getting older and sleeping on the ground isnt that fun.

I'm pretty critical of powered camping.

The people that take their RV's to a concrete pad where they hook up...big screen TVs and living rooms in their rigs.  Cell phones, satellite tv, etc 

Like...there HAS to be a line where camping isnt camping anymore.

And for me, that's totally it

When I'm camping, its rustic, off the beaten path, isolated, no cell service, no power, an  outhouse(this is a minimum requirement for me with kids) and that's it.  I drag my tent trailer out there, usually for 5 days or longer.  I pack 2 large coolers, a dry bin and our 2 kayaks.  My propane burners plus a mini propane bbq.

We sit around the fire lots, I play guitar a lot, burn energy by exploring the lake with kayaks, maybe some fishing, bocce ball, board games, exploring/hiking, etc.  No watches or keeping track of time allowed. 

It sure resets me in a powerful way.  I love it so much

Should be fine as long as you know what you're signing up for. An airbnb tee pee in a semi-remote place should be adequate, if you're not used to backpacking or wilderness camping.

Don't worry about the camping vs "glamping" thing, honestly you can have awesome trips just driving from camp site to camp site. You don't have to rough it necessarily. The main thing is that you're outdoors.

99% of my camping is 4x4 required. I loath staying in a ‘campground’. 
My fiancé now understands why once she started camping with me, it’s just better being totally away. I’ll stay in a camp ground if there is literally no other option... think middle of desert it’s 115 degrees, but there’s an alpine mountain in this desert where it’s 87 degrees. That was about the only time as an adult I enjoyed the campground. It wasn’t crowded it being summer in a desert.

I much prefer traditional camping but if you are not near a water source the whole no shower thing is annoying after the first day,  even more so if you are hiking or working up a sweat in any way. 

Last time I was camping up in the mountains up here at a http://www.totalescape.com/outside/campsites/yellow-post-campsites/#.XGsIRB6IadM that I had stayed at before. 

Got there late with some rednecks shooting guns with their kids so camped about 2 miles away out in the woods,  it was super windy,  cold,  and raining...  my dog stole most of the bed lol it was miserable so I got really drunk. 

Now with more dogs it's hard to fit everything in the car and I like a hot tub close by.

I like lightweight backpacking with a hammock. Like where you throw on your backpack and hike +10 miles into the woods to camp. I usually backpack in or near Yosemite because it's what's close. I've never seen a bear, but I have gone down trails with fresh bear poo. It's a little scary, but most animals including bears want nothing to do with humans.

These are the last two places I camped.
Fern Lake. I mostly just tripped and listened to music out on that rock all day. The climb up was crazy. Like 2000' of elevation gain in 1400' with 40lbs on my back.

Went here last Spring to backpack and then before Christmas again.




Glamping or sleeping in camper isn't for me. I would just stay in a hotel and do day trips if I was going to do that. Car camping with a tent or hammock is cool if you're just there to drink around a fire and chill with people or you need cheap accommodations for a festival or park.
