Not sure why this is directed at me?
You realize reading and writing is literally about all I do?
If you ask me not much written in the 21st century is worth reading.
Usually not much past the 30s.

And if this is a slight at my writing abilities, rude.

It's definitely not an underhanded comment about your abilities. I've never
read anything you've written beyond a couple posts.

It is, however, a comment about average americans; And what they consider
to be "great american reads." Half the books on that list require no more than
an 8th grade reading level. That surely says a lot about the american populace; But not
necessarily about you.

It stands, though, that outlander, or any young adult fiction for that matter, does not fit the
bill of 2nd best book for americans to read. That shit is what's truly :sad:

I wanted to point out Atlas Shrugged is at #20 in this list and that makes me want to throw up in my mouth just a little bit.

Oops, just now saw this response, my bad.

And I agree, that’s why so read so much Lovecraft and Blackwood, the dialect of the 20th century is so much richer and deeper than that of today. Super people are still writing great stories with fantastic plots, but very really in modern writings do I find a sentence that causes me to pause to drink it in.

Also, I will say, I wouldn’t exactly consider outlander to be young fiction, granted I was young when I read the series.

I think it's good that the list includes both children's and adult books. To the person who said anyone can write a successful YA fantasy novel: let's see you do it.

To the person who lamented Sand County Almanac's absence: it is a good book but not a novel and thus not eligible. People like 50 Shades of Gray. Big deal. As if you always consume only the highest art.

Funny you should say, I actually am writing a kids book as well as a fantasy-esque
novel. The novel isn't directed at young adults necessarily but nevertheless it
isn't that hard.

I can post the poem my kids book is based off but I'm afraid of you bitches stealing my idea:lol:

Also, by pbs' own admission, they are supposed to be great american reads. just sayin

Stephen King ripped off Theordore Sturgeon and Chris Matheson.  Theodore Sturgeon wrote fantastic sci-fi short stories, and Chris Matheson wrote a lot of the Twilight Zone stories, as well as I am Legend.  Theordore Sturgeon has a strong hint of horror, and stephen king even commented that he read Sturgeon a lot.

Compare the Theodore Sturgeon short story 'It' and the stephen kings 'It'.

ET was also stolen from Theordore Sturgeon.

As you should. Fifty shades of gray started as twilight fan fiction. That means
a fan wrote a story inspired by twilight and it became a book. yes its that
easy to write a fantasy fiction novel. legit, my 8 year old niece can come
up with an imaginary story good enough to write into a book haha.

Coming up with an exciting plot is not equivalent to writing it out in a form that entertains people. Your first point also proves nothing. Just because one fan wrote an entertaining book doesn't mean it's easy to do. Writing popular books is extremely difficult. Otherwise, everyone would do it.
