Well this post has been a long time coming. I have found myself in a situation that I am encountering for the first time. Basically I can’t tell whether or not I should stay with my girlfriend or not and would appreciate insight into my unique problem. So the main problems in our relationship include her emotional issues, and my lack of interest. Let me explain.
I have only been in two long term committed relationships, including the one that I am in now. My first long term relationship lasted 8-10 months, and the one I am currently in is coming up on 8 months. By the way, I am currently 19 years old so my own maturity comes into play here, I would say I’m fairly mature for my age but I’m not ready to settle down or anything.
The “fire” or “spark” in our relationship has slowly faded for me. When I was younger and used to be interested in a girl, often it wouldn’t work out and the “relationship” if it can even be called that would end fairly quickly (probably 2/3 times). The difference with many of these “flings” I would call them was that I would always state upfront that I was not looking for anything super serious from the jump.
So the background to my current relationship: I met this girl at the beginning of college. At the time I was heavy into drugs. Essentially, all of my drug use that I’d been using to cope throughout high school (started with psychedelics, then got hooked on Ritalin, and started abusing weed, acid, tobacco, alcohol) came to a breaking point. Shortly after this, around the same time that I got with my current gf I quit all drugs because I was fed up with the drug induced psychosis. From here on out my gf and I spent every day together and were essentially together 24/7.
This had a serious damper on both of our social lives and I think we both used it as a coping mechanism because she missed home and I missed using drugs. Before this I would do things alone and was pretty independent, but a few months into it I started becoming pretty socially anxious and somewhat depressed. She was in the same boat.
As the relationship progressed I just started losing interest and us being together all the time really took a toll on me but I was stuck in my ways, stuck in the habit. We were spending so much time together that we were becoming irritated and annoyed with each other all the time but still spending all of our waking hours together. This was a mistake on both our parts.
Anyways, I’m currently at the point where I don’t know whether we can stay in the relationship and both be somewhat independent to the point that we don't get annoyed/bored at each other all the time as a result, or whether we won't be able to work it out and we have to break up.
