Last Halloween I burried a couple smashed pumpkins :UPDATE: is it a pumpkin?

Just to get rid of them instead of cleaning up the gunk and putting it in a trash bag.  Now I got this



Never thought the seeds would survive the winter and actually grow.  The only problem is there's not a lot of room for them to grow and I know those suckers get long.  There about 3 to 4 foot from my neighbors property line and they are real dicks who complain about everything.  I'm gonna have to try to get them to grow up or down the side walk.

I've never grew anything before but I am really into taking care or these and helping them mature.  I' liked it so much I've pretty much taken over taking care of my girlfriends plants and flowers and plan on growing a lot more stuff next year in a better location.

I've never really grew anything before does anyone have any tips on how to make these pumpkins get the best delicious nutrients they can and become big boy pumpkins?  I've been doing some reading and have been giving them a great deal of water in the early morning and evenings and they seem to be thriving so far.  Is there anything else i should be doing?  Should I give them some kind of good plant soil or something,  or should I just keep watering them and let them do their thang?

Also I'm looking into what I can grow next year I have a good bit or room for things, what are some other good plants or vegetables I can grow next year?  I'm a newbie at this gardening thing but surprisingly I'm really into it.  I want to grow some cool things that aren't too hard to grow.  I'm willing to put in the research and work to grow something I just have no idea what.  I'm thinking tomatoes and more pumpkins,  but what else can I tenderly and lovingly grow into something I can pick and consume or have use for?  No marijuanas though I have a family and don't want any troubles from law enforcement, but would love other suggestions.


UPDATE 7/10

So now I'm not so sure this is actually a pumpkin plant now that there is something fruiting on it.  I also burried some squash/gourds last Halloween but I'm not sure where I burried what.  Here is some pictures of the 2 whatever's that sprouted.







Can anyone verify what this is exactly?  I'd like it to be a pumpkin but will love and care for it no matter what it is.

You might like growing peas.  They have a pretty fantastic harvest yield if you like them.

squash family and cucumber (as well as tomatoes and some other "garden" plants) are very hardy and often make shittons of volunteers. 


any fertilizing would have been best added into the soil prior to planting (or sprouting in this case, since you didn't intentionally plant them), as you don't want any residues on the surface where the pumpkin may come to rest once they start to form.  even strawing over something like a manure-product could result in bacteria/organisms that could make you sick


just let them do their thing

They look pretty happy as they are, just keep doing whatever you're doing now. Never grown actual pumpkins so there may be something specific to pumpkins that you should be doing that I'm unaware of. Actually I can't really grown any kind of squash here because of SVB (it's a moth, a pest). I've grown plenty of other shit though. Generally the best thing to do is just let them do their own thing.

They're viney so I'd just move the little pumpkins when I need to, as gently as I could. I know with watermelons you sometimes turn them to keep from getting flat/weak spots. That might be something to do. Either way it's pretty damn cool! I'll be burying my pumpkin mush this year for sure. Wonder if it would work for pie pumpkins too.

vine borers destroyed my grandfather's squash last year.  they might've had 5-6 total squash that made before the plants died

Yeah I can't ever get more than 1 or 2 summer squash before all my plants are dead. I hate those little pieces of shit. I've spent many days out there trying to pick off every single egg in the hot ass Texas sun. I've chased them around with those electric rackets, not because I thought it was going to stop them from coming, I was just frustrated as hell at that point and wanted to kill every one of those little fucks I could. I tried using tulle to cover my plants but it's impractical at best. Wind can get pretty high here, that shit doesn't last very long before there's a rip or tear and then before you realize it's even there, your plant is already covered in those infuriating red dots.

you could try diatomaceous earth around the stalk, but good luck if it's a running squash compared to a bush.  even then, ime, the caterpillars can get in from below the soil surface.  no idea how deep they can burrow

I just gave up on it. I'm not the biggest fan of squash, but do like summer and butternut squash so I tried to grow them for a couple of seasons and same shit no matter what I tried. It's just not worth the bed space or effort honestly. In place of that squash I could easily grow enough okra to last me a year.

that and okra thrives in your intolerable heat (well, up to 105*, at least, it will keep growing) whereas most hot-weather plants shut-down production above 95* and focus on water-conservation/respiration (aka stalling)


butternuts did great in CA, but i tried them a few times back here (middle TN; hopefully leaving asap) and they produced poorly, especially with as much water as it took to keep them from wilting.  very little sweetness/nuttiness, thick shells and pithy flesh

sunflowers are fun to grow, easy and they get tall AF like 10 ft, lovely flower heads then turns to uuuge fucker heads that slump over from the sheer weight. eat teh seeds, save the dried heads do whatever with em

keep doing what you have been doing.  those flowers are going to turn into pumpkins.  If you want big ones, you'll have to remove most of the pumpkins from the vine.  the fewer pumpkins per vine, the bigger they will grow.

next year, plant your seeds in mounds 10" or so high, in groups of 4 or so.  As a general rule of thumb in gardening, never plant deeper than 2x the length of the seed.  tiny seeds like green onion or something, are sown on the surface, or with a tiny sprinkle of dirt over them.
zuchini are easy as fuck. tomatoes, peppers of all kinds, herbs like basil and rosemary, all easy as fuck.  corn is easy, but if you're planting a small stand of it, i recommend hand pollinating, otherwise you'll end up with some scraggly ears.  Spinach grows fast and its easy.  peas and beans are easy, and they actually benefit your soil through symbiosis with nitrogen fixing bacteria.  melons and cucumbers are just like pumpkins.  I did japanese eggplant once, and it was pretty robust.  gave me a few eggplants, even though it was heavily infested with mites.

Well hot dog! I was hoping it was a pumpkin but some others told me it was a squash but I'm not sure if I burried any squash or just threw them away.  I figure since they were so small I'd just throw them in the garbage but I can't remember for sure.  I've been googling pictures and can't really find anything that looks like that.  It's still fun to grow though.
