Caudiciforms and other new additions
    #23307638 -

A few weeks back I went to a private plant sale and was very happy to be able to pick up a few caudiciforms for very reasonable prices. I haven't seen too much on this board about keeping caudiciforms. What defines a caudiciform is much more vague than what defines a cactus or an orchid but like orchids, carnivorous plants, bromeliads, and succulents there is a small group of very dedicated collectors.

Anyway a few of these I got seem to be quite rare (not the obesa and the cactus obviously.) Anyway feel free to share your caudiciforms as well. I would like top get a caudiciform trading ring going if there is interest.

No they are not epiphytic, at least these ones aren't though others may be. The uniting characteristic of caudiciforms is a large stem or root which generally functions to retain water in dry periods.

I have grown caudiciforms in the past - Adenium, Dioscorea, Tylecodon. But they just grew too large.  I have only a Pachypodium and a caudiciform Euphorbia now.

But none of them are epiphytes - they all grow in soil.

Maybe some mod or whatever might think this has now been long enough.

Recently became quite interested in Caudiciform plants, started with a Euphorbia (Madagascar jewel) but that one doesn't really have an interesting caudex..

Right now I got: baobab and D elephantipes, but I got to grow a new Euphorbia from seed (it germinated) cause I gave the original one to my ex (which then made seeds shooting them across the room  )

My elephantipes arrived by mail recently and lost the little bit of green it had. I assume this is normal and it will start making new green once it roots nicely and feels okay?

Anything I can do?

Trying to grow it incl the Baobab, under very lightblue LED (so vegetative growth wavelengths), I hope it works..

They are there on the right, trying to keep them in a slightly heated terrarium sort of thing but not really figured all of that out.

If you like caudiforms you might want to consider sacred Trees, Like: Boswellia (frankincence), Commiphora (myrrh), and Bursera Species (Copal). Often, these trees form caudexes as they grow. They are used medicinally and for incense production.

I love me some caudiforms!

There are actually some epiphytic caudiforms like Myrmecodia. They are ant plants and have a hollow caudex for ants to live inside of.

There are also some really cool neotropical blueberries like Macleanea that form a caudex so depending on what types of environment you have there's a caudex for everyone!
