What was a typical 1960's/70's hit of acid dosed at?

I know most answers will probably be speculation, as a lot of users here probably fall in the age bracket of 18-25, but what was the typical dosage on a single hit of acid floating around the streets in the late 60's/early 70's? I ask because I was thinking that back then psychedelic usage was probably a lot more prevalent than it is today. Because of more widespread use and popularity of psychedelic drugs, mostly acid, the average joe of the 60's/70's would be a lot more keen on the idea of experimenting with LSD (with having little to no prior experience with drugs) than the average joe of today. The average potency of one hit of acid has picked up in the past two years or so with 100 micrograms a hit, give or take, being a pretty strong trip. Shit, It's crazy to think that people with no prior experience were taking hit(s) stronger than that back then. Just a random thought I had...

It varied. Many were high though, particularly in the 60s. White lightning & purple haze were ~300 mics. Orange sunshine was ~300 mics. Owsley had a batch called blue cheer that was ~500 mics.

Makes sense... I could see how one would become "awakened" from 200-300 micrograms. I'll take a single gel tab (no tolerance) and be blown away. Most I ever took was two and at times the mindfuck was pretty difficult.

(pretty difficult is sort of an understatement, not gonna lie)

That's why freakouts were so common. There are the few batches these days that are 200+ mics, lab verified....one was 291 mics! I never tried those, but I did try one that tested a little over 200 mics. Blew me the fuck away. Would never eat more than one of those. Wouldn't eat more than two of a lot of what's around these days. It's a great time for LSD!

Seriously. My last acid trip was one blotter hit and I had straight ego death, lost my marbles. :lol: way stronger than the blotter I was eating years ago where two gave a trip of half the strength.

I asked Sand and as far as I can recall he couldn't actually remember what Sunshine was dosed at. Definitely 250-350, though, so not a huge difference. I think everyone fixated on about 250 or so, and the only lab confirmed dose I ever had was that exact amount and I'd say it's almost perfect. It's weird seeing some of the psychiatric literature, though, and reading about life changing things happening on 50 mics or so, but I guess being in a totally isolated situation with your eyes closed could really stretch even a small dose.

Anyway, yeah, I think it was about 250 as average and other ones on the scene that went as high as 1500 or so. I find anything above about 1000ug just gets more confusing and strange than useful in any way and I don't trip at all in social situations or festivals or whatever, so it's not really surprising that people taking 250ug or more in crowded, strange situations often went totally batshit either temporarily or permanently. Maybe it's better in the US, but I'd say the average dose in the UK now is about 50ug if not even less.

On a vaguely related note, all the sources I've ever read claim blotter acid didn't exist until the 70s but I swear they eat blotter in Easy Rider.

Are you sure? I swear the guy gives them four pieces of blotter and they split it apart. I'd imagine all the literature on the subject is more accurate than a 15 second clip from a movie, I guess, but I think he even gives them advice about splitting the thing apart and warns them to not take two or something.

Are there photos of sunshine acid and white lightning and all these old pills? I've never been really clear on whether they were basically the same thing as microdots just a lot stronger or if they were pretty hefty pills or what.

No, it was ~300 per. Sand has said so, as did the the Feds that tested all of the ones they confiscated.

Fair enough. He definitely(ish) wasn't sure when I spoke to him and I think that one book about the Brotherhood that isn't a piece of shit claims 270ug, but if there were confiscated and tested ones then that's that. I guess 300 is a pretty decent dose, but when the stuff was being taken casually and in clubs and parties and shit that's just way too much. Every single thing on Google seems to state 300ug for Sunshine, so that's probably right.

I'm still wondering if Tim Scully's book will ever materialise or if he's just stopped giving a fuck. Everyone I've ever encountered who has met him in person claims he is the most intelligent person they've ever communicated with, so if he's actually spent the last 8 years or whatever writing a book I would expect it to be pretty fucking great.

Yeah, it looks like he's said 300ug in interviews that took place years before I met him, so that's probably more accurate than anything he said to me. Apparently even Schou's book is dubious at points, but it definitely seems to be about as close to the truth as anyone is really going to get with an illegal organisation from many decades ago. Looking at charts of confiscated and tested samples of acid, it does indeed seem like 250ug was the average from around 1965-1973 or so and then it started to vary enormously. I think 90s doses were pretty strong, but I'd imagine nothing close to the first wave since it was all aimed at ravers and such.

Also Sand apparently refused all interviews for Schou's book, which is kind of weird cause I could swear he's directly quoted numerous times throughout.
