Can I put music on iPod without iTunes?
    #22701833 -

I keep all my music on an external hard drive. I dont want to put it on my computer and waste all the memory space.

Is there a way to transfer directly from the hard drive to my iPod?

Alternatively, is there a way to have it in iTunes but not stored on my computer? Like its in iTunes but only playable if the hard drive is plugged in sorta thing?

I have way too much music to store it on my computer.

Thanks guys.

I don't think so.

I think the only thing you can do is plug the external hard drive into your computer, add the songs to your iTunes, sync the songs with your iPod and then delete all the songs from your computer.

and no, I think if it's stored on iTunes, it's stored on your computer unless you use iCloud or something.

you could just tell itunes to use that external drive as the music library folder.

I use foobar2000 for mine.

I used to use songbird for a good while too.

But there are many other choices.

I am sure there are other sources out there besides tired old winamp, but that is what I used to put songs on my ipod without itunes, fuck itunes!!!

When you download songs just make sure they open in winamps player, then you can plug your ipod in and have the tracks sent to your it via winamp, I have a ipod shuffle I got a while ago, and this works well for it, no problems at all.

I just download any track I want from whatever site, and then have it open in winamp, then send to ipod.

There are alternatives to iTunes for transferring music to an iDevice, one alternative is called CopyTrans. You can also just change your iTunes library folder to your external drive if you want. Just click the arrow in the top-left corner, hit Preferences and go to the Advanced tab, and then there is an option to change your iTunes media folder which you can just set to a folder on your other hard drive.

winamp is stuck in 2005, it's super bloated and lacks many features that are expected on any modern media player.

yeah, it's a shame those fell out of style. people like us love them. there was a great premium one called g-force that I used to have for winamp back in the day.

Now it's standalone and works with any media player.

I'm gonna have to see if it works with linux. :strokebeard:

In iTunes preferences>advanced you can uncheck "copy files to iTunes folder." Though I like to use that to import all my .mp3s because iTunes organizes all the artists into separate folders.

Restore your iPod before loading and make sure to check 'manually manage music files.'

Here is a dope visualizer: https://www.soundspectrum.com/aeon/download.html
