In Canada, we do it hardcore every day. I get suicide bombers trying to kill me every sunday on my way to church, but I don't cry about it. Canadians are the greatest hand to hand fighters in the world and one day we will chase the American dogs back into the sea from whence they came.

I think the real problem here is that our American friends have no way of understanding what a kilometer might be, so a crucial piece of OP's anecdote is incomprehensible to them. Maybe someone can convert that into furlongs for them.
