Moral of the story: Pirate the crap out of any file you can find.  Download, upload, make scans and recordings and share, share, share.

The system of Intellectual Property has to die and it has to die As Soon As Possible because the challenges we face are rising.

Pirate, pirate, pirate so that the system dies. Future generations will be thankful you did.

The challenges may be rising, but there is always a way to get pirated stuff from somewhere. There will always be countries out there that allow the hosting of pirated media, and warez websites (where the majority of pirated software and media originate) are actually quite profitable for those involved. The real challenge comes not from hoarding files, but from keeping the internet out of the hands of corporate interests (in the sense that we don't over regulate the internet just to keep Hollywood movies profitable).

Cool video, I particularly liked the movie parts with Star Wars, Kill Bill, and The Matrix. The Star Wars ones I was more familiar with, but watching them side by side for the three was interesting.

It kind of amazes me at how often the phrase "begs the question" is misused. I understand, since I used to use it incorrectly, but since someone pointed it out to me I'm not sure I've really heard it used correctly much if at all.

i've been waiting for musicians to start only releasing a couple singles, then if you want to hear more you have to go to their shows.

to me it seems like that would be a good model.

That wouldn't happen. It requires everyone to be on board and no one to "undercut". Plenty of artists are happy with what they do and what they make.

That kind of thing actually already happens in the world of electronic music.  Producers will make something like 40 or 50 songs that they consider for an album, pare it down to a dozen.  If you ever want to hear the songs that didn't make the cut (and granted, they likely didn't make it because they weren't good enough), you gotta go hear the producer live.  Tons of unreleased and never-to-be released songs get heard that way.  It's real cool.

But I know what you're saying with it not working for a lot of types of music.  Especially acts that are groups or bands.

Aye much easier for a single person mixing a show to throw a spin on an old track, have a bunch of different unreleased remixes and variations of their songs provided by collaborators or mix in new ones spontaneously as they feel vs a band that needs to coordinate with multiple members... only a few I've seen have been able to throw down anything that amounted to skilled improv or dynamic flowing shows - between the buried and me mixes their songs similar to how electronic artists do.. very skillfully segueing in and out of different songs 4-5 minutes into each. They also are smart enough to run all their feeds through a laptop by their drummers side, allowing him to throw any sort of plugin on any track when they feel like really mixing things up.. That and their in ear monitor system allows them to communicate very effectively and coordinate amidst the ordered chaos. Live bands have the potential to have almost all the advantages of electronic musicians - just very few have gotten around to fully utilizing what is available to them.

I'm not saying there isn't value in hearing unreleased tracks. Radiohead notoriously had a few great tracks that were solely live tracks until In Rainbows came out, and even then they only made Disc 2, and countless others throughout their discog. But if you want to implement unreleased tracks as an incentive to go see the live show that's just going to fail. The level that you need for that to be an anti-piracy level is massively popular music, but people who go to those shows want to hear music they know. If you go see Beyonce or Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift you want to hear shit you know, not a few tracks you know and then a bunch you don't. The biggest selling point of pop music is familiarity.

It takes a bit of a nerd aspect to go to see, say, Flying Lotus, and get excited about hearing tracks you don't know. I consider myself a bit of a music nerd and I still get more hyped about hearing the songs I know and love more than some shit I haven't heard before. You need to be like Bob Dylan status, where there used to be a HUGE community based around collecting live bootlegs (my mom used to be into this shit in the early days of the internet and news groups) in order to get as excited or more excited about hearing non-recorded songs. It's fun to see an act you are intimately familiar with and hear a song you don't know that well, but the majority of people in the audience, no matter how big or small the act is, want to hear the stuff they know. That's why most people are at the show to begin with.

Anyway I really didn't take away much of a non-piracy message from this video. The things they were talking about were much more on the creative level than the consumer level. Even when they talked about the idea of intellectual property it was more about creators than consumers.

How is any jazz musician able to go to an open mic and play any song out of the Real Book without practicing? It's more about chord changes than anything (though I do think Phish's ability to play so many different tunes on any given night is impressive and any accomplished musician would agree to a certain extent).
