The local "new york" style pizza joint has been cranking out some great pies lately. Examples of a few- the chicken Florentine with chicken breast chunks, bacon, spinach with alfredo sauce on thin crust. Its got all the major food groups going on. Then the Aussie with pulled pork and barbeque sauce, other toppings on it slip my mind right now, probably some red onion. Also on hand-tossed thin crust..

Since I had it not long ago...Chicago's best pizza by far. Pequods. Dat caramelized crust....hnngggg

Eww that looks horrible.

However, sometimes looks can be deceiving, never judge a book by it's cover and so on. I'd take a bite of it, maybe I'd be pleasantly surprised, but damn, I can't say that looks very appetizing.

:shrug: I honestly thought it would be disgusting first time I tried it. The crust is definitely off-putting...but it's actually fucking amazing. It's just caramelized cheese on the outside of the crust. The closest thing I can really describe as being similar in texture is the outside of a well-made grilled cheese.

nice, caramelization is critical for good pizza imho, the burns are superficial, it doesn't taste burnt, it tastes wicked...

a few blocks from home here we have apizza scholls, they do the that up right imho, anthony bourdain raved about it in his pnw episode heh

capricosa is my staple pizza - ham, mushrooms, kalamata olives, crispy anchoives and tomato sauce. on nice crispy pizza bread.

That looks like its going to taste disgusting.  Its deep dish though so the access sauce probably hides most of the flavor from the charred crust.  I've never seen pizza that looks like that in the NY metro area, then again we don't really have any deep dish places around here.

Like I said, it's just a thin layer of slightly blackened/burnt cheese that they layer between the crust and the seasoned pan. Texture is pretty much that of a well made grilled cheese. You get the crunch of the caramelized cheese, the chewyness of the crust, the cheese again, and then a fuckload of slightly crisped pepperoni and sausage and it's absolutely amazing. It's just not very photogenic...
