Questions on decarboxylating canna-coconut oil
    #20775662 -

The cannabis infused coconut oil I made didn't turn out as potent as I thought it would.

My questions...If I place the canna-coconut oil in a proper bowl, and put it in the oven at/around 250F for 30 to 45 minutes, will this help to further decarb the THC that's infused in the oil, ultimately making the oil more potent? Sounds like a stupid question now that I'm typing it, I don't see why it wouldn't though. The smoke point of coconut oil is around 350F so I don't suspect it would start to break down the oil or funk up the taste either....would it?

I prefer to eat the stuff straight or on toast, but if the canna-coco-oil is used in brownies, will the THC continue to decarb a noticeable amount during the 20 to 30 minutes of baking?

How it was made.....14g of decent (not top shelf, but not shabby) nugs were put into 3/4 cup of coconut oil and 3/4 cup of water.  Before starting the infusion I decarboxylated the bud for 20 minutes @ 225f to 250f, 10 minute more as the oven cooled. The oil/water was on the double boiler for a little over 5 hours. I have a feeling I could have gone longer with the decarb, that's why I'm asking if I can somehow do that with the THC already infused in the oil or if baking alone will help. I know I could have gone longer with the infusion too, but that amount of time has worked for others.

I ate a tablespoon of the canna-coco-oil yesterday, which would be somewhere around a grams worth of cannabis, and it didn't quite get me where I thought it would. A gram taken orally should have had me at the epitome of stoned. It still provided a very pleasant & long lasting buzz, warmth & love in the body along with a lifted hazey head-space, and when I did go to sleep 7 hours later after eating it I slept better than I have in a long while....it was just milder than I suspected it would be.

The stuff tasted delicious though...I enjoy the texture of coconut oil melting in the mouth and I'm one that digs the taste of pot.

Did you heat it while you were making the oil? That should have done the trick already if so.

You probably didn't over cook it at those times and temperatures, so more heat may be in order, but how much is just a guess.  It's really hard to say exactly what the best course is now, but I feel like 30 at 250F may be the most you want to do since 30 at 250F is enough to almost fully decarb on it's own.  Then again it takes some time to heat up.  But is also takes time to cool.  Hmm... 30 at 250 does sound ok from here.

I usually decarb my bud broken up and wrapped in foil for 30 minutes at 250F.  I have the oven and a baking pan preheated, drop a foil package in, and just take it out in exactly half an hour.  It gives really consistent results.  Then I usually add it to vodka to make an extract that can be easily measured and added to anything.  Usually 60 ml (2oz) per gram of bud.  Then you just measure the liquid and add to whatever, usually a drink.

I know a guy that makes kick ass butter for cookies and stuff.  He boils a combination of bud, water and butter for 1 hour.  So the decarb is 1 hour at 212F.  Then he strains it and rinses the bud well with more hot water.  The water/butter gets cooled in the fridge until the solid butter layer can just be lifted out of the water.  This would probably work just as well for coconut oil that would be solid in the fridge.

Also, 14 grams seems like a heck of a lot.  I get fried off of around 1/2 a gram or 30ml of my tincture, and the guy who makes cookies ends up with about 0.3 per cookie which ends up pretty darn strong for most people.

Edit: Sorry, I missed a few things in your post.  Yea, a full gram should be pretty much be maximum stoned, can't get much higher, so you must have been getting decent results in the past.

One more thing that stands out is the 5 hour double boil.  That seems awfully long to me.  Like I said, I never made the butter myself, but I know that people are getting great results from around .3 gram doses of herb boiled in water/butter for only an hour.  And everything I've seen says that should be a good time and temperature combination for decarb.

So maybe too much heat?  I hope you get it sorted though.

That's more or less what I did, just slightly less time and slightly less heat. I wrapped the coarsely ground bud in foil. Already had the oven pre-heated to 225f. Placed the foil/bud in the oven, after 10 minutes or so I raised the temp to 250f for a brief minute or two. At the 20 minute mark I turned the heat off, 10 minutes later I pulled the foil wrapped bud out of the oven and let it cool on the counter for another 5 minutes before opening it up.

Yea, I was intending on making this a relatively potent batch of coco-oil. 14g of dense chunky nugs into 3/4-cup of oil would give me enough for one potent batch of brownies or cookies, and 5 to 10 moderate to strong doses of oil to eat straight...And indeed, an entire gram equivalent taken orally should have had me laid out, that's why I'm surprised and wondering why it didn't.

I ate the oil on a completely empty stomach, followed by a non-medicated brownie. I didn't eat much until many hours after eating the oil, so I'm thinking that perhaps if I eat a good meal with or after taking the oil that will help more of the cannabinoids absorb and make their way into my system. I felt the first signs of it in my system quickly, within 5 minutes after eating it, but it just never developed into a strong stone.

I've heard from some people that will do a full 24 to 72 hours when making their cannabis/coconut-oil infusions with a crock-pot or a double-boiler....and I have heard from others that only go for about an hour or two, most seem to go somewhere around 3 to 5 hours though.

I checked the temp of the cannabis-coconut-oil/water on the double boiler several times during those 5 hours, it was always between 150 and 190 degrees. So I don't think too much heat would have been an issue, I also don't think that sort of heat (below 200F) is sufficient to cause decarboxylation.

I appreciate your input man  ....I'm thinking I'll just use some to bake a small batch of brownies or cookies, and see if having it infused/baked into food will help with absorption. I'll also put a few tablespoons worth of the canna-coco-oil in a bowl in the oven at 250f for 30 minutes, then eat a tablespoon of that stuff straight just to see if that extra bit of heat/time made any sort of difference.

as long as the bud was browned decently I think youre good.  putting it back in the oven probably wont hurt.  honestly, I think I get way higher when I eat the oil with food.  like if I put the oil on a pizza id get higher than if I ate the oil plain.  how long and at what temp did you bake the bud in the oil?

I baked/decarbed the bud for 20 minutes at 225f to 250f before mixing it with the coconut oil. Then the bud was mixed with the coconut oil and on a double boiler for 5 hours, with temps around 150f to 190f.

The bud surely changed in color after I did that initial decarb, nothing too dramatic just a bit darker and a tinge of browning. I let the foil cool before opening it up, upon opening I could tell there was still some moisture present....The bud wasn't crispy dry after the decarb and I hear most folks report their bud being totally crisp when decarbed. Not sure how crucial that is, but that might be one reason the stuff was weaker than hoped .

The other is that I took it on an empty stomach and didn't eat much besides a snack for several hours after, I think this might be the main reason. I know most things (kratom for example) will absorb into the system more so when some food is ate after or with.

I took 3/4 of a tablespoon of the coco-oil 30 minutes ago after having dinner, and I'm now about to have a snack...so I'll see if taking it with food will do the trick before I try to further decarb or bake with the stuff.

you can put it back in the oven and decarb more.  or put it back on the double boiler.  it should be pretty dry.  I just decarb mine on stove top so I can see when its done, and its faster, but oven is fine.  it should look like this:

Thought I'd update this thread and tell what I ended up doing, in the event anyone else runs into this same "issue" and to note how much of a difference this made.

I ended up giving the canna-coco-oil some more time under heat to further decarb. The oven temperature was set at 275. Once the oil got up to temperature I could clearly see small CO2 bubbles forming & rising, indicating that decarboxylation was happening. I turned the heat off 10 minutes after I saw the CO2 bubbles start to form, CO2 bubbles continued to form for another 5 minutes after the heat was turned off.

1/2 cup of that oil was then baked into 12 cookies, somewhere around 0.5g to 0.7g of bud equivalent per cookie.

One cookie would have me nicely stoned. With two cookies, a few hours after taking them I forgot what I took. I literally thought I had taken a psychedelic and was trying to remember what it was that I took , then I recalled the cookies I ate. Super euphoric too, tingles in and across the body reminiscent to what I get from lsd .

So yea...Decarbing the oil a bit more and / or baking the oil into something was way way more effective than eating the oil straight like I was doing before. Both aspects likely helped, giving the oil some extra time under heat and the heat from baking, as well as having the oil/goods distributed through out the cookie to help with digestion/absorption.

Fuck.Yeah!  Idk why, but I always get way higher when I put the oil in an actual food rather than eating it straight

Seems to me like decarbing has nothing to do with heat, but rather dehydration:

1. There are several ways to decarboxylate marijuana for use in extracts. A layer of marijuana buds or leaf can be placed in an oven at 150 degrees for 15 minutes. This is far below the boiling point of THC yet warm enough to evaporate the carboxyl group.

2. Decarbing can be done via freeze-drying: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showthreaded.php/Number/18440910/vc/1

Decarboxylation gives off water via a chemical reaction.  This is not the same as drying or dehydrating.  I can't say for certain that it wouldn't work, but 150F for 15 minutes doesn't seem like nearly enough to efficiently decarb.

Your statement seems mixed up to me. My educated guess is that water content in the buds results in certain quantities of the cannabinoids to retain their carboxyl groups; and fully dehydrating the weed causes the carboxyls to be released from the cannabinoids and evaporated...

And of course the Cannabis Culture statement is coming from the angle that the weed you bought isn't cracker dry (which may usually be the case).

what about decarbing BHO?

like if I think I got a crappy batch, could I in theory decarb it just the same?

I know off topic, my bad.

BHO is already highly concentrated THC.  the reason we decarb with bud is to convert THC-A into THC, so you cant really decarb BHO AFAIK

Well based on the fact that THC originates as THCA and based on the fact of the whole need-to-decarb issue I would presume that you could have a batch of BHO that had a significant amount of THCA mixed up in it.

so if someone says they have "solvent less decarbed hash oil", I am lead to believe that it is co2 hash oil either made with decarbed weed, or has been decarbed after.

thc-a is an oil soluble in butane, then it would be present. making the decarb process applicable.
if not, then it must be done to the weed before hand.

but to help me understand this a lil better, after making butter, bake it at 250f for 30-45min to get a little more potency out of it?
