No future, don't know what to do
    #19942246 -

A friend said he could get me into a really great career and it was great, for the month I worked, but I've been blackballed and can't get any more work whatsoever. Have tried and tried. I was making 15 an hour plus 48 hours of mandatory over time every week.. This all on no prior work experience, so yeah, really fucking great.

Now I'm getting ready to sell my soul to work in retail for 7.50 an hour where you cannot take overtime no matter how much you want it because company policy will see you fired for it.

I don't know what the fuck I'm supposed to do with my life. I have no money and no way to 'start my own business' (seems to be a common occurrence on these boards) besides I don't want the stress.. I work best under someone, I'm a really great worker, I don't bitch, moan and complain, I don't procrastinate or do a half assed job. I just want to make more than minimum wage doing my job.

With this new job I had, I was planning on building a life.. I can't build a life on this retail horseshit. I will be permanently in debt to someone and that's just not ok.

I just dunno what I'm supposed to do. Feel like everything is collapsing around me.

Go to a temp service.

I knew many people who have got great jobs through them, you usually get paid a little less for the first 90 days, but if you do good work after that they'll hire you in and you'll start making good money.

What do you really want to do? Think harder than "sit at home playing xbox."
A shitty job is better than no job.
Go to school and work your way towards doing what you want to do.

The only thing "I want to do" has been destroyed as an option because everyone says it's stupid to try and get into. Welding, something I'd really like to do, but so hard to find work. It's like paying for the classes/certs for nothing, unless you use it as a hobby it's pointless. Kind of the same boat I'm in now.. I got certified to mess with radioactive material to 'give me an edge' but it doesn't give you SHIT. Demand is so much less than the supply, it's impossible to get in it.

Bullshit, get certified in welding and come up to the utica/marcellus shale regions, I always hear people advertising for welding jobs.

I cannot leave where I live (Houston TX).

Are you telling me getting certified alone is going to get me a job because I have no real work history and I'm severely adverse to lying and bullshit.

I was told once I got my radiation safety certs I'd be lined up for work the rest of my life and that's simply not the case, I can easily see how welding will be no different.

But yes, I would love to do welding for the rest of my life.. I've always been the type who loves to create things and working with metal/wood I know the conditions suck sometimes but that doesn't bother me. It's the only thing I can say that I would actually want to do with my life but everywhere I look it's "don't bother, getting certifications is one thing, getting hired on with some company is entirely different, it won't happen and you'd of wasted all that time in school"

Why can't you leave where you're at?

Look up some welding companies online and get in touch with them.

I can't vouch that you'll 100% percent for sure get a job in the welding field up here if you get certified, but I can tell you that you more than likely will.

I hear commercials for companies looking for welder literally every day on the radio.

I don't get this temp service shit and no one wil ever explain it to me. I'm not looking for a retail job through some temp service. can find that on my own. What the hel am I gaining by going through them? I went to one once, and they put me on a computer and told me to fill out applications, I said "I was told you would help me find a job" and they said "this is what we do".

I can do that shit at my house.

You fill out an app through them and they get you a job, it's quite simple.

Companies use temp services and pay them to find them new workers because it takes companies time and money to hire workers, and they don't want to take the risk and who they hire turns out to be a shitty worker and ends up getting fired, so they just pay a company that has streamlined the process.

Then if you prove yourself in that 90 days they'll hire you because they already know you're a good worker.

Tell them you're looking for a long term factory type job.

Just go talk to them man, they'll help you out.

Fuck certificates. Get a bachelor's degree in something real like engineering. At least an associates degree. Then take whatever job you can get. Doesn't have to be exactly what you went to school for. The degree is just your foot in the door. From then on out your work experience will define your specialty. Find a reasonable priced University too. Don't want to be in debt forever.

Yeah seriously. Go get a bachelors in engineering or computer science. Has a HUGE job market that pays good.

Who said that?

There are MANY options:

a. Military
b. Financial support from the school
c. Scholarships (Not gonna happen easily though, if you fucked around or aren't a minority ethnic group)

If you don't want to try and better your situation... that is all on YOU.

You'd rather slave yourself over min wage than join the reserves, get a fully paid schooling AND get paid? That is your own problem.

Don't act like there aren't alternatives to reduce the cost of schooling or even have it fully paid for.

I don't qualify for financial aid because I didn't join the draft before I was 25 or whatever it is and I'm not joining the armed forces just to get schooling. Definitely can't afford to put myself through college for a degree either. It would be hard to pull off just going to a trade school for a 6 month program.

Right now we don't pay rent, but this living situation is coming to an end and I'm going to have to take a job in retail just to afford rent. My wife's checks only just manage to cover all the other bills we have. There's also got to be one of us home at all times to care for my son. Can't just leave an 8 year old by himself.

This job I had was my best (and probably only) bet to be able to actually build a life and it's just not going to work out.

So you're saying you'd rather live a shitty life barely hanging by a thread paycheck to paycheck than sucking it up for 2-4 years and join the military so that you can provide a good future for your son?

I know I sound like I'm pushing the military, but it is a really good option for someone like you who needs:

-money
-skills
-a good reference to get in a new field that pays well (nothing better than the military on the resume)
-support for your family

It isn't like you have to be on the front lines, you go to boot camp and then after that it's pretty much all specialized skill training from there on and you can do whatever field you want from computer science, to aviation, nuclear power, whatever you want.

I'm just saying, this isn't about you anymore. You have a son, how are you going to support him and send him to school when he gets older if you're living paycheck to paycheck at a soulless job? He is going to end up the same as you unless he manages to get a scholarship or something or you manage to find a job elsewhere.

Just something to think about seriously and at least consider it.

There's no way in hell I'd ever consider joining the military, no. If I even could get in (my brother can't with his felonies, not sure why I'd be any different) I'm not signing my life over to the govt. because as easy as it is to say "you'll never actually go to the front lines" you can't guarantee that and neither can I. I'm not fighting a war I don't believe in just because I sold myself out to the military for schooling.

My wife went to boot camp and my story from Juvi and her story from military boot camp are extremely similar. I'm not going through that shit again, either. Have never understood why someone would willingly subject themselves to that type of shit just because they have so few options.

Boot camp is just to get you started into a world of structure and discipline. It's respectable that you can finish it.

All I'm hearing is you're not willing to even consider the options you do have because of your own ego, so have fun living paycheck to paycheck at your "soulless retail job" which has to be so much better than sucking up your own ego for a few weeks.

There are literally thousands of support positions and cyber positions that pretty much entail you never seeing any kind of combat and 100% guarantee you a job outside in the civilian world. Besides just training to make sure you can shoot a rifle and test you every so often to make sure you remember how to properly use the gun, you will never see combat unless you want to.

They have people lining up to join, they don't need you.

Just saying dude - it's obvious you won't join though and I'm wasting my time, hah.

Enjoy the soul-less moments at your retail, I guess.
