To me, even that seems like a mental attitude belief that isn't necessarily true. I just don't know.

I relate to this too. It's like by the time I open my mouth to tell someone my thoughts about something my mind already has thought of 4 different theories that prove myself wrong. It doesn't bother me though, that's just the way I think.  I think of it more as an asset than anything. In my heart I see myself as a spiritual person, which psychedelics play a central role in, but my mind knows to think rationally and that I don't really know anything for sure.  I don't think this is insane at all, quite the opposite really.  What IS insane is 100% believing in one thing as if you know all of the evidence to prove your point.  (atheism, Christianity, psychedelic inspired spirituality, etc.)

I have this friend who I think is really on the edge of insanity. He's one of the smartest people I know, but very emotionally unstable. He once took acid and apparently had a traumatic experience and called 911 on himself. He won't talk about it at all or tell me what he experienced. He was raised as a REALLY, REALLY hardcore Christian. At one point he says he realized it's all a lie and now he is the most stuck up Atheist you could ever meet.  The thing is, he now will not even consider any evidence that there is something more than what science knows.  Actually I try to lead him to learn more about quantum mechanics and the idea that the observer is significant, but he refuses to even look into it.  He's smart, but his mind works differently than mine. I can't help but to think of ALL of the possibilities while he sees the world as black and white and he just KNOWS the way things are.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you sound very sane to me.

I just feel like it's not common/normal and it interferes with some of my interactions with people

I still don't know that it is supposed to be. Nothing you've said has struck me as unusual whatsoever. What exactly interferes with some of your interactions with people and how does it interfere?

It is difficult for me to be "straightforward," as people say. Most people speak simply and voice their opinions on issues.

Quote:
I typically find myself unintentionally writing in the active tense using "English prime".

Rather than saying "X is Y", I say things like "It seems to me that X exhibits the characteristics commonly attributed to Y"

This way of speaking does not lend itself well to common conversations.

Don't get me wrong, I interact with people, but only the people in my graduate school seem to be interested in asking me questions about what I think about things after interacting with me more than once

I always enjoyed Nietzsche for his understanding of "Perspectivism", and how "truth" is nothing more than the particular perspective of the individual, and that there really isn't an "ultimate truth".

Still, we in some way need to be grounded by some sort of answer, but that all manifests solely out of perspective and personal experience. Who says there even is an ultimate truth? Nobody knows and for some reason I feel I need to know or believe in something, yet that's the very thing I am desperate to escape.

Well thats just my solution, my advice because I find the truth painful and unpleasant.  You've gotta have a mechanism to laugh and shrug things off.  Make your life into a little parable about how fucked up life is, laugh at it (or shrug, or cry, or scream, or sneer, or fight, whatever you do), let it go as insignificant.  That is true art and religion wrapped up into one.  Once you realize that you are actually equal to everyone else it gets alot easier.  Don't waste time living by advertiser's standards, they are evil incarnate.  Pure desire.

Nietzsche has a lot of very interesting ideas. Most of them seem like they have many grains of truth in them, but lose their power when conjoined to form explanatory hypotheses.

I hear you, I feel that way about many though. It's hard to present an idea on this subject that is fully convincing. It may temporarily convincing, but that's usually all it will ever be.

Well to try to explain a collective experience through an individual is always going to fall short.  I don't believe in enlightenment persay, but being steered a certain way certainly makes it easier to deal with the tramua and suffering I deal with due to consciousness.  I've always found life absurd above all.  Almost unbelievable.  It is almost easier to believe in nothing.

That's the thing though, I over think that as well. To believe in nothing is still believing in something. It's committing to the idea that nothingness exists, or possibly insinuating that I know this to be so, when in essence I know nothing.

I do tend to agree with you though man, I really don't believe in anything, and in ways I want to believe in something. The thing is, just because I "want" to believe in something, doesn't mean I'll actually believe it. I can pray to God all I want, but if I don't truly believe in God, then what am I really praying to? I don't pray, I used to, but I was just using prayer as an example.

Well the question becomes what kind of world does a god live in?  Maybe you can begin to understand this with a life of reflextion or a night of heavy drug use, but it will never really apply to the life you're living.  You are your own god, an angsty buddha.

I think you have it backwards OP. The more philosophical flexible you are the easier it is to communicate with people, not harder.

Thanks. I think as humans we're all basically insane in that we base our knowledge around certain "facts" that we don't really understand.  For instance, gravity.  It's a safe bet that gravity exists and we know how it behaves, but few if any of us actually understand why it's there or what it is.  It's like we don't really know anything.  In Principia Mathematica It took 360 pages just to prove that 1+1=2.
