Man playing violin in a DC metro station * 1
    #19458705 -

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by, and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace, and stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping, and continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, on a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste, and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?"

Everything else aside... If you want to do an experiment like this properly then do it when people aren't running to get to work and can't stop for anything. Best of all he did this at the peak of winter
Busk when people are getting back from work or in the evening. Fucking shit.

:brilliant:

People have no concept of value now a days. They base it on everything but how they value it themselves.

$32+/hr is not being ignored.  People go to the subway to get places, not to listen to pretentious music.

Wow just wow people can be so self-centered and narrow versioned.
I'd like to think I would've stopped but who knows, if I had to be at work or something I might not of and that's just a bit sad.

Interesting experiment for him to do though

Yep people taking the subway during morning rush hour generally have to get to their destinations on time, the experiment was set up to "fail" (if $40+ an hour can be considered failing) whether intentionally or not. Most people are not going to say "Fuck work, I'll stand around watching this guy" no matter how good he is.

I was in Madison (WI) coming and going from a co-op and there was this old man playing a violin in 10 degree weather outside. I stopped and watched for about 5 minutes and there were several others who did the same.
I gave him a dollar plus my coins.
He played really well considering how cold his hands must have been

I actually really enjoy street performers.

Interesting story, but yeah, it was designed to fail I believe.

I also notice that statement. Music is subjective to the listener and so it is impossible to state that it the best music ever written. Maybe someone would have stopped to listen if the guy was playing Pantera, or perhaps some ISMFOF?

lol

As someone very familiar with the DC area, even knowing this information before hand a lot of people would say "fuck this shit, i'm late for work! :crankey:"

I also think the bit about the $3.5 million violin is pitiful. talk about a backwards study.

Damn, and I thought a $300,000 Steinway was damn expensive. That violin must have belonged to or been made by somebody famous.

I read a little more about the story. Apparently out of the entire crowd, one woman alone recognized him and stopped to listen. She gave a $20 tip, a considerably larger tip than the other thousand people put together.

So basically, without her, it would have been $12/hr.

I love when things like this get posted. It is basically a guarantee that there will be a vast majority of replies talking about how dumb it is. It doesn't even matter what the fucking point is, people in the Pub just love shitting on everything

Pan handling is not just something you can go out and do the first time and be great at it. You have to know your place.

He can play the violin on stage like a boss, okay great. He can't pan handle for shit. End of story.

Look at him relying on his pricey toy, tisk tisk.

The only violin I can think of in that price range is an original early year Stratavirous (maybe spelled that wrong) but it's like the holy grail of violins

I could have told you how this experiment was going to go based on my own experiences at the upscale shopping mall or at the Ritz Carlton or whatever. They always have a pianist playing there, and I always stop to listen for at least a few pieces, to gauge how good that person is. Most people don't even bother, they are too busy shopping or eating or talking to whoever to stop and listen. The pianist is simply there as background music.

Additionally, most people can't even tell a good pianist from a shitty one, so obviously the same is going to be true for violin. I remember this one time I was listening to this pianist play a series of Chopin's Waltzes, and he kept screwing up and missing some of the notes. The notes he did get right he simply played like a robot. People around me were remarking what a great pianist this guy was. Uhh no, this is your average piano-playing I'd expect in a bar.
