Couchsurfing. Strike up a convo, see what comes out of it. You don't have to crash at people's houses, convo / coffee / lunch will be enough to get you started, and many couchsurfers are quite awesome people to know anyway.
Show up. Pick up your tent, vehicle of choice and go spend say, a weekend there. See what there's to be seen.
Go buy some Huichol / Tepehuano art, it's absolutely great and uplifting. Then ask the artist / seller / whatever, about their village, traditions, life, peyote, whatever. Ask about the local curanderos, if they have a good one in the area it'll definitely be worth your time to show up. Tell him you feel lost and just found out you had some roots there and need some help reconnecting with them. A few hongos later, you'll be singing a very different tune
I'm learning Spanish and plan to fly over the fucking ocean to get there as soon as I have the cash to do so. If I lived a few hours away from the border, I'd probably show up at least once a month to trip with some locals. I've heard some amazing things about those mescaline ceremonies with drums around a fire.
There's no guarantees that your world will change in one day because of this stuff, but it's like an exam, the first condition of anything happening, is you showing up.
Oh and goes without saying you should be super careful with your safety, see where it's OK or not OK to go, where you have cartel activity, that kinda thing. Anyway better to take a little risk doing what you love, than to stay at home wondering what it could have been.
