Cannabutter;

Ever had success?

Back in my first year of college, a group of friends and I tried making an oil for brownies.  It worked, though the results were minimal.

I have much more faith in the batch of butter I'm brewing now.  I'm simmering just over 2 ounces of trim in hot water; it's got another hour or so.  When the water is done infusing, I will throw in a full pound of butter and let it simmer for another 3-4 hours (looks like I'm pulling an all-nighter).

I'm very excited for the results.  Once the butter has separated in the fridge, I'll be making a batch of lollipops for myself and some lucky friends. :thumbup:  What flavor should I make them?

I'd go with raspberry or cherry or strawberry. Thats just me though :P

Mmm.. raspberry does sound delicious.  I'm sure they'll end up tasting like sugary weed regardless of what flavouring I add.  I was doing the water simmer, with quite a bit of water, as I hear it makes the butter taste a lot cleaner.

Usually people don't add enough plant material to make oil. A lot of people make butter, but I have found butter to not have such a high potency as compared to vegetable oil or coconut oil. If you are using trim, you need to use at LEAST 4 ounces of close trimmings, and if you are using bud, use about an ounce. If not, you're going to get these brownies that get you high, but not how edibles are suppose to be.

My pops put 5 ounces of close trim in his last batch of oil, which makes about 5 batches of brownies. My fucking GOD were they strong. Some of the strongest edibles I have had. Whenever I get some from the dispensary though, they literally don't do shit, they just taste like weed.

General consensus of the web seemed to say one ounce of trim per pound of butter.  I used two ounces of trim for my pound of butter.  I'm thinking they will be quite potent; however, I obviously won't know until the process is complete!

Surely that may be different with oil which is why we didn't do so well back in the day.

So far it's looking good.  I made a small mistake and stepped away to clean.. when I came back to stir the mixture was boiling heavily (which sucks because it was on the lowest setting my stove can reach).  I simply removed it from the heat for about 10 minutes.  I'll keep juggling it on and off the flame to meet my four hour goal.

You shouldn't be boiling it. You should put your butter, trim, and water in a crockpot, set it on high, and let it sit for 16 hours.

I'm avoiding boiling it. :lol:  The boiling was an accident.  I'm keeping it at a pre-simmer temperature.

I went with the stove-top method as I've seen more teks for it and I have no other use for a crockpot--making it a lousy investment. :thumbup:

No other uses for a crockpot? You kiddin me? Throw a roast in there with some potatoes, carrots, broccoli, celery, and let it cook over night.

Boiling is fine but THC is fat-soluble, not water soluble, so boiling it in the water without butter is pointless; there's no extraction happening.  What you do is put the butter, water, and trim/weed all in together and leave at a full boil for a few hours adding water as necessary.  Crock pot method works too, but I've had GREAT success with the water/butter method.  Water doesn't exceed its boiling point, which is well below the vaporization point of THC, so boiling doesn't degrade anything at all.  Cooking cannabutter in anything for 16 hours is nuts, everything in and around your place will reek of weed.  Shit when I would make cannabutter you could smell the process happening down on the first floor... I'm on the third.  16 hours, sheeeit that's a long time to have everything reek of pot just sayin'.

There are claims that other oils in the leaves (not THC specifically) are extracted from the water-only infusion (some extraction is happening as the water turns green :tongue:); I assumed this would leave for a cleaner butter.  This my assumption from a tek that has over 500,000 hits and raving reviews compared to the other teks out there.

I'm planning a full-boil run this weekend with another two ounces of material.  I've heard boiling it works just fine; my goal was to try a few methods and compare them myself.  I went with the cautious method first.  Sometime later next week I will attempt a butter-only run.

I couldn't see myself going over 4-5 hours in any of the methods, however.

I'm two hours in, post-butter, and will be closing it up in about an hour and a half and then letting it set to cool before straining it.

When I make cooking oil, it is a MINIMUM of 12 hours. You will notice a HUGE potency difference, it isn't a fast process. Some people cook there oil for 24 hours, anything after 24 hours is kinda pointless though.

As for the house smelling like pot, just make some cookies or cook some bacon, problem solved, and you got some warm soft cookies or crispy delicious bacon.

I took it off the heat at 4:20 and strained it. =)  It was on the heat for an hour and a half without butter and almost four and a half with butter.  I think I did well.

Here's the strained goop before I did a few boiled water rinses and squeezed out the remaining goods:


This is one container of the strained liquid (I didn't have a second pot big enough as my pressure cooker has jars in it):


Here is the second container, fitted with a natural foamy heart :heart::


I poured both of those containers back into the main pot:


I could have strained it again through a finer mesh, but I figure the sediment will sink to the bottom of the water.  I'm gonna let the pot cool for 30ish minutes before sticking it in the fridge. 

I'll harvest the butter within a day or two.. then we're onto Cannabutter Adventures Phase II: Lollies! :thumbup:

Don't stick it in the fridge! Put it in the freezer! All the extra small plant material sinks to the bottom and the h2o freezes. So all you do is crack it out, then cut the ice off the butter, and your done. When you have it with water, it gets all messy and it is rather quite difficult.

A bit late for that advice! ..I figured throwing it in the freezer would cause the butter to freeze inside the water making it impossible to recover.

Here's what it looks like 12 hours after being in the fridge:




I turned the coldness setting up a bit to help it solidify.  It feels very thick/solid; I cannot dislodge the butter by pushing on it with my fingers. :thumbup:  There's a bit of weed scrap in it due to not sifting it twice, but I don't mind.

I'm going to leave it in the fridge until just before I crawl to bed this evening.  I'll put it in a separate container and freeze it until I've gathered my lollipop molds from the craft store!

If you get sludge layer between the butter and water make sure it's hot when you leave it to settle next time. I re-heat mine because it takes me ages to strain it.

There is surely to be that "cream" layer that everyone talks about which picks up some of the sediment.  I'll re-melt that and strain it; I may, in fact, go ahead and re-melt all of the butter and give it a nice fine strain to ensure no cannabis chunks end up in my lollipops.

It's minimal if it's hot, i had this problem early on. The layer gets thicker the cooler the mixture is when you leave it.
