So I made a huge mistake booking a flight on Spirit airlines. It was the cheapest on paper, but way more expensive than booking on a real airline in reality. If you're planning to fly, stay far away from this airline. Seems their business model is to snag one-time customers, bilk them for hundreds of dollars, then expect to never see them again. When they saturate a route with pissed off customers, they create new routes and start again. You've been warned.

Here's my Yelp review.

So they charge you for carry-on, up to $50. They charge you to check, up to $100. It's extra if it's over 40 lbs. They charge you to pick a seat. If you're with a friend, you'll sit apart unless you pay. They're rude, rude, rude. You hold for 90 minutes on the phone, then they hang up when you don't fall neatly into a pre-defined customer service script on the screen of a guy at a call center in some other country.

You starting to get it yet? Well, that's just the beginning.

The airplanes are not cleaned. They stink, and they skimp on AC while you're at the gate. The windows are filthy. There is trash all over the floor. At least one of the passengers on my flight had to sit on a vomit-soaked seat that stank of bile. If you're six feet tall, you will have your legs bent up the whole time for lack of room. The seats don't recline. Ice water is $3 no matter how long your flight is.

The flights average anywhere from an hour to six hours late. They NEVER cancel flights because then they would have to refund your ticket. They will make you wait until they have absolutely no choice but to cancel after making you wait the better part of a day. My flight was already four hours late when the plane even showed up at the gate. They only have 50 of them, so no spares. If there's a problem, it ripples through their entire system. We finally board over four hours late, another hour delay in cramped seats due to "maintenance problem". Then they tell us they don't have a pilot. WHAT?!?! Seems he went over his FAA allotment of work hours for the day and went home. Deplane and two hours later, we're finally in the air. Seven hours late. Sigh.

Now, in addition to nearly every flight being delayed, they have the GALL to demand you arrive an hour before your flight or they will immediately sell your ticket to someone else. You will be offered a voucher for travel another time, but it's only good for 60 days. After that, you're out of luck.

If you miss your first flight, your return ticket will be automatically rescinded as a no-show. Happened to another passenger I overheard who bought a ticket on a REAL airline after a multi-hour delay on his flight out. He planned to use his return ticket on Spirit but they rescinded it when he was no-show for flight out. Nevermind that he was there and checked-in but was forced to buy a ticket on another airline only after hours of Spirit delays.

However, in all fairness to the generosity of Spirit's management, I was pleasantly surprised when I went to pee and found that use of the lav is provided completely free. But check the fine print when you book your flight. I will not be surprised when they install coin-operated doors on the lav with an up-charge to flush the previous user's toilet deposit before you go in.

hahaha sounds about right. I'm a ramp supervisor for British Airways at tampa international airport. There are several airlines that us rampers like to poke fun at... Spirit being one of them. USAir is another.

However, there are a few things you should know. First, it's highly unlikely that any of the check-in agents or gate agents actually work for Spirit. Most of Spirit's passenger service positions are contracted out to a ground handling company called ASIG. Most of these guys work for minimum wage or just slightly above. Here in tampa, they make $7.79/hr. Most of them are treated like shit and as a result they have no motivation to work or be helpful.

As far as the maintenance delays are concerned... wouldn't you rather endure a delay while the mechanics service the aircraft instead of encountering an in-flight emergency?  British Airways has 256 aircraft and we have no "spares". Aircraft are ridiculously expensive, and any time they aren't flying they aren't earning money. An Airbus A320 (which is what I assume you were on since you mentioned the seats not reclining) are about $90 million each. It's simply not feasible for the airline to just have aircraft sitting on standby. Not to mention, the airport charges outrageous fees for aircraft to sit on the ramp.
When other airlines such as Delta, BA, or AA are able to swap aircraft when one has a maintenance issue, it's because they cancelled a flight (usually to a less popular destination) and reassigned that aircraft to your flight. People are getting screwed either way.

The pilot issue is nothing that Spirit has control over. Part 121 airline pilots are not allowed to work more than 12 hours a day (only 8 of which can be flying). Trust me, it pisses them off just as much as it does the passengers when they time out. They can lose lots of pay when that happens.

Also, budget airlines (actually, most airlines in general) are stingy because their profit margin is incredibly low. AA's transcontinental flight from New York to Los Angeles nets a whopping $300 profit ONLY IF EVERY SEAT IS FILLED... otherwise, they lose money on the flight.

Now, with all that being said, Spirit is a shithole airline that I would never fly on and they seriously need to rethink their business strategy.

dude spirit blows dick...my friend was flying from chicago to denver to visit right before 4/20, his flight got cancelled cause it was like windy in NY and the flight never made it to chicago...also spirit is too small to have another plane sitting around to use :facepalm:

he stood in line for like 2 hours trying to get his flight rescheduled and they couldnt even get him in for another like 2 days....his flight back wasnt as bad but damn, he said he refuses to use them again and he is a pretty frequent flyer

I always book the cheapest flight and they work out great.

Anchorage AK to Boston, one stop, bought tickets seven days in advance, no luggage fees or any other horse shit for a whopping $213.90.
