Papaver Somniferum Giganteum

I planted my seeds at the beginning of February in California.  I am just now getting into flowers and I've always been fascinated with poppies, so I thought I'd give it a try.

I started them in peat pots, 5 seeds per pot, and put them under and aerogarden light to grow.  They germinated in a week beautifully.

Then I transplanted them, in the peat pots, to prepared soil outside a week later.  Most survived, but not all.

They are now approximately two to three months old.  They look like lettuces.  They've been in this "lettuce stage" for quite a while - or maybe it just seems that way because I'm so impatient! 

Can anyone maybe give an estimate as to how much longer I have to wait for blooms?

Are the flower buds already forming?
Just be more patient, it will flower in a week or 2-4.

Thanks for your response.  No sign of any buds, just endless lettuce leaves. 

I'm sure my impatience it making it seem longer :wink:

Well they can take 5 months from life to death in my garden so you have another 8 weeks till the plant starts to die.

It's like watching a kettle boil, it takes ages and ages lol, poor bugger I know that feeling! That's why I always plant early blooming types along with mid and late bloomers so ill have poppy flowers the whole season! Next time you may consider planting a few different types of poppy so you don't have to wait so long.

How long do you think somniferums bloom in middle california? say til september? And do they contain any opiates before the blooming stage? Anyone ever grown a poppy indoors then put it out to flower when its still really small to get a little pod? Sorry for all the questions just some things thats been on my mind and didnt really wanna make a new thread thanks for any answers. And sorry OP for the possible derailment.

You can eat the leaves and get high, i have done it before. But let me tell you its no way near the potency of the pods. Patience is EVERYTHING. Dont lance, cut off pods, or do anything to the plants until they are 100% ready, your time spent looking after the plants wont go unrewarded.
