^That is only partially true, there are also important documents  and some rare music.

It was a quick format and I immediately turned the HD off when I found out my mistake.

dude thats excellent news. I know how i'd feel if I lost my external.

Now you understand why your hard drives ALL need to be encrypted and sensitive data put on hidden partitions...

"Deleting" a file doesn't do jack shit.

yeah i think the stuff you delete from your hdd isn't deleted untill the space is re-filled with new content. it still keeps the data on the drive, however, once new data is filled onto the drive, that then replaces the old invisible data. so if you want to remove 100% everything from a hdd, you need to delete it all, and then rewrite the drive with new data to use up all the previous space.

That's not 100% true.. it's possible to recover data from stuff that has been overwritten multiple times. Although not necessarily with something like recuva. Or something you could do yourself.
The best way to secure a drive is to use a program like DBAN that write 0s to the drive over multiple multiple passes.
And then physically destroy the platters. With fire. That's what the government does to destroy sensitive data on flash media and such.

Full disk encryption is the best.
I think SSDs and such are even easier to pull data from that has been overwritten

indeed, hard drives are like brains

they never really forget anything, it just gets buried. and the further its buried the more complex equations it takes to find it

but.. it can still be found. Although you might need some high tech lab to do so.
There is a company called driversavers out there that pulls data off destroyed drives. I've seen them recover files off a melted drive burnt in a fire.
They charge like several hundreds at BARE minimum though for a single drive, up to several thousands.

it's pretty interesting stuff. i thought it was just one or two over-rides that would clear out the data.

i guess your right though, if your looking to really destroy data, just smash it to bits with a sledge hammer and melt it in a fire or something hahah

hwat about water damaged drives, can they repair those?

Not repair, but pull data from. Depending on the extent of the damage. But those labs can pull some data off some pretty fucked up drives.
