That's because the mass of the Higgs boson is a critical part of a calculation that portends the future of space and time. Its mass of 126 times the mass of the proton is just about what would be needed to create a fundamentally unstable universe that would lead to a cataclysm billions of years from now.

"This calculation tells you that many tens of billions of years from now there'll be a catastrophe," Joseph Lykken, a theoretical physicist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill., said last month at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

"It may be the universe we live in is inherently unstable, and at some point billions of years from now it's all going to get wiped out," added Lykken, a collaborator on the CMS experiment.

Meh, it's interesting and all, but does it really take much "calculation" to assume billions of years from now there will be a catastrophe? Has anyone ever assumed the universe was stable? Kind of seems like common sense to me :shrug:

I'd kind of like to go off on a separate note here...I completely understand that there is a possibility that the Universe may end one day.  And that end may come sooner that what these scientists predicted (billions of years) for any other reason.

But why do people automatically assume that this prediction, or any other type of scientific statement/prediction/hypothesis/whatever, is valid, just because it comes from a highly-reputed establishment?

I doubt most of us on here are experts in physics...we probably have no fucking clue how anyone came to the prediction that the Universe would end in billions of years because of the mass of some particle that we can't even understand the reason why it's important.

And another thing - who here has any idea how the fact that the Higgs-Boson particle has 126x the mass of a proton, has anything to do with the Universe being unstable? 

I understand that this stuff is hard to dispute, but whatever happened to questioning things....instead whenever we hear complex-sounding science talk, we just go "Ooooooooooooooh" :Awemazing: and go off on our stoner predictions about how we will be wearing biosuits in the 4th dimension by then and have the capacity to endure whatever catastrophes come our way.

the Higgs-Boson particle has never really been super interesting itself...it just got a lot of hype because they nicknamed it the "God Particle"

Which is a truly pathetic, sensationalist sobriquet which serves no purpose other than to create a sense of mystique surrounding something otherwise uninteresting to the layman.

I fail to find any reason in calling any particular sub atomic particle a "god particle" or that the higgs boson is even particularly interesting compared to any of the other known particles. It's just another particle. And if the universe implodes in a billion years or a trillion it won't matter to me or you because our species will surely be extinct. Get some perspective man. None of this is epic except only lame nerd virgins whose dicks get hard from math instead of girls.

Do you even know what that means? also its not THE higgs boson, there could be more particles that serve a similar purpose that they haven't discovered yet

it also serves the purpose of helping those scientist get more funding, there'd be a lot less interest if they just said "Hey there's this particle that we're pretty sure existed but know we're 99% sure!"

Man it's not even that interesting to the scientists...I talked to one of the particle physicist who worked on it and he really wasn't that excited about it...he thought it was cool that they found it but that there were a lot more things that better deserved their time

No offense, but I find displeasing your stereotype of people who show interest in highly-complex science and mathematics concepts as "lame nerd virgins whose dicks get hard from math." 

I think this prediction is stupid as well, but it comes off as ignorant to push a negative stereotype on people who involve themselves in intellectual pursuits...that's the kind of thing I would expect to hear from some spoiled, high-school prom queen, rather than someone like yourself.
