I'm thinking of joining the Army

I want to enter Officer Candidate' School. I'm very good physical shape and I have a degree. There's one problem I'm 31 I read that you can request an age waiver but I don't how readily that happens.

I was wondering if they're any Army people on the here and maybe someone could give me insight. I don't want to goto a recruiter don't want to be harassed or whatever else first I just wanted to talk to people who've been through the experience.

I think that you'll find that the army sets the physical standards for the whole military to some degree. I am not talking about physical fitness standards I am talking about some genetic conditions that could affect the way that you serve your country. Truth of the matter is that the army can do anything that they want as far as waivers go as long as they like you and you aren't in bad shape.

If you have a degree in political science or something slightly less useful to the military I think that they will be less likely to bow down and kiss your ass as they would if you had say a 4.0 in an engineering program.

If your 31 and not getting where you want in life I would say try out the military and see if it's for you. You may find out that you are better than the 10 percent of the population that are out of work and struggling to get by. If you want a stepping stone towards greatness I think that the joining the military can't hurt in getting you just that.

Give it a try. If you are fit and smart then you are in with a chance, especially if they aren't meeting their recruitment quotas. Supply and demand, nigga!

Thanks for the input I graduated with a political science degree I've always wanted to work in International Affairs. I just kinda of got bogged down the job I have because I became complacent. The money was okay and full benefits but now I want something more meaningful.

What I read on the website is that you have to enlist before your 29th birthday.

I spoke with a recruiter when I was 31, they didn't even mention my age.

In my profession (basic sciences), it's all but impossible to finish your degree by 29, so they have to make exceptions.

How about you don't join a band of welfare funded murderers and look elsewhere? No army can ever solve any problem, and Al-Qaeda don't exist. There is no such thing as a globally organized terrorist offense. Except for your own government.

No.  I got to the point where I was receiving emails saying: "Let's get your physical scheduled and start the process of getting you in".

The problem was that I had a hell of a time getting a straight answer on what I would be doing and what my life would be like.  I was 30, with a PhD, and obviously was in a different place in my life than an enlisted 18-20 year old.  I got a better offer and went on my way.

Join the army if you like the idea of kissing the ass of officer above you 24/7. That's really the only thing that'll get you anywhere in the army. No matter how high you get, you still gotta be willing to get screamed at for a small mistake. My recommendation is go somewhere else. You'll get paid more and treated better.

You might get sent to fight in an illegal war, killing innocent people.

Look at Iraq, the whole weapons of mass destruction thing was bullshit, while thousands of innocent lives were lost.

Also think about how more US army personnel killed themselves than were killed in action in 2012. If you go to war you may come back with PTSD, or worse without a leg or arm. You might come home in a coffin.

You're situation doesn't sound bad enough to justify putting yourself in such a horrible situation.

The deepest thing to consider is whether your willing to quite literally and contractually sell yourself to the government.

When I went it to hear about part time duty, every recruiter just made me feel like a big pussy for not actively pursuing active duty (4 years minimum). Those recruiters are worse than timeshare salesman, so be god damn sure your ready to sell years of your life to the army before you even walk in.

A lot can change personally in 4 years, I am so damn glad I didn't enlist.

Your missing the POLITICAL science part of his degree. In his field and most other fields there are lots of politics. If you want more out of your life than just an average existance and can take some bullshit now in exchange for greatness down the road I think that the army still isn't a bad place to get it.

How many people have ptsd from being empoverished while growing up as a child? If you want a chance at something that not everyone has you have to man up and take some risks.

If you want to waste your life being involved in it your choice
But I highly suggest you do research on the wars were fighting now recently and the real reasons

That's the problem. The recruiters are salesmen so there's an incentive for them to be dodgy to meet their quotas and get their bonuses etc. There are plenty of people on Reddit who offer advice on this kind of thing and who have previous experience.

I'm not trying to be flippant and interestingly enough I was studying for my pol sci degree during the invasions in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Even than the reasons were pretty transparent so I'm fully informed. No offense but I'm not a naive 17 yr old that thinks war will just be a video game.

But there's the professional and personal motivation.

Professionally ultimately I want to work Foreign Relations or established a career in the Federal govt.

Personal reason there's nothing here for me other than my job I don't really have much going for me. Overall I'm pretty discontent with life.

That's why I've avoided going to any recruiters don't trust them to give me honest breakdown of what I'm signing up for. Thanks for the heads up on Reddit I'll check it out.

OCS is very hard from what I hear.

I'm 27 and even though I loved being a soldier I hated being in the army (if that makes any sense).

OCS with your qualifications would be good if you make it...but being a average enlisted jerkoff at 31 will be tough. If you fail OCS you will be one of those enlisted jerk offs (which is great I was one) and you most likely will take orders from a NCO who is younger and not as smart as you.

All in all I have to say besides certain exceptions, it's a young mans game set up for young men. As long as you can keep up at 31 go for it.
