Deep meaning, don't get traditional, don't get names. Symbolism is key. Anytime I get a tattoo I make sure that i'd feel uncomfortable telling anyone other than a best friend what the meaning is (usually I don't answer that question).

Agreed.  I have two so far...

The first I got when I was 18.  I was dealt a bunch of shitty cards in life and this tattoo symbolizes my ability to keep humor in my life despite the evil I've endured.





This one is a portrait of my mom, who died when I was seventeen.  The guy who did it was a friend of mine from high school who got into tattooing and I'm really impressed with how it turned out.  I gotta admit, I was a bit weary of getting a portrait but after seeing his work I trusted him to do it up proper.  I really like how he captured the feathering in her hair.  It was her signature look.

If you plan on getting a generic tattoo, ask yourself this question.  "If this were me 10 years ago, what tattoo would I get?"  10 years ago at age 17 I probably would've gotten a Led Zeppelin or a picture of a pot leaf.  I still absolutely love both of my tattoos and don't regret the decisions one bit. 

Get a tattoo that means something special to you.  You don't need to walk in and pick something out of a catalog.  You can ask the artist to draw up an idea you have and work with him over a period of time on the image before he jams it into your skin.  Get creative.
