I should probably explain this pic; this was when we were stuck, the ice in front of us started opening up. from when this picture was taken, it took us about 24 hours to break through what you can see into the open water.

Hey indica what aperture and focus length of lenses do you use for the more landscape oriented shots?

Fucking A, that sounds like the challenge of a lifetime. Is it fairly easy to find a job (seafaring at least, maybe not as epic as yours) living in a port city?

i was using a 50mm f1.8 prime lens ($100 orso) at about that. google "brenizer method" awesone pic technique

The company I work for supplies a research/resupply ship to the aus antarctic division, the AAD  runs the antarctic bases, which we ship cargo and people to and from, and also does science research voyages around the antarctic waters on our ship. the company is going bust at the moment due to some fuck ups in the office so there is a small chance they will sell the ship & contract to another shipping company, but likely to send the crew with it as well (as we're experienced in running it)

yeah not too tricky, but of a tough industry to get into but once you're in, you're in. most, if not all companies will fly you to wherever you need to get to to join a ship, and it's their responsibility to get you home, wherever that may be

Nice, did you start by simply asking around the docks or did you have a connection?

Being at sea as a profession really sounds like something I'd like to do, at least for a few years.

nah I got a job on a ferry as a steward a few years ago, then got sick of that and worked up to IR (basically an able seaman, greaser which is not hard at all), and started work in the 'real' industry
